Again and again men and nations have had this bitter expe- rience in history. During the last severs! months and at the present day, we have been constantly facing three distinctive dangers throughout the world. These are: Moral relaxation, dissolution of unity and surrender of idealism. These dangers quite threateningly have been manifest in our industrial and po- litical life. Over against these dangers, need two lines of activities. First, we need the loyalty and patriotism of peace, which is a more difficult thing h we than the patriotism and loyalty of war, by as much as it is harder to live for a cause than to die for it. Tt was for such loyalty and patriotism that Lincoln appealed in his Getty burg speech, when he said, “It is for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from th onored dead we take increased devotion, to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion.” TIs peace now to fail and be faithless where war was faithful? we need the dynamic re or purpose of a new world, sther we shall have a better world not depends upon how we meet or now the dangers and duties of peace, and whether we do as effectively win- ning this better world as we did the work of winning the war. Our present practical and immedi- ate question is, What Christian men and women and the Christian church can do to win a better world? First of all, we ought to believe in the possibility of a better world, otherwise we have no business as Christians in the church. Tt is the duty of the present day Christian men and women to visualize clearly the evils which are to he overthrown and the enemies who still remain to be vanquished. Moreover the church of the new day must radiate upon the perplexities and confusion of the world, an irresistible ray of convic- tion in regard to moral and eternal forces of the world, such divine prin- ciples of life, as righteousness, sacri- ficial ser and living faith in God and in man. But now here is the tragic point: How can the new world that is to be hereafter be made out of the old breed of men? The only thing lacking for the rea- lization of this admirable conception is a new humanity. Man himself is still the greatest element in his own problem. Many formulas and plans for a new world are set before us, includ- ing capital and labor problems as well as international situations. But can you have a new civilization, new world order, with old breed of men? How is man to be made new? Here is the supreme function of the church in providing the satisfac- tory answer—we are back once more at the beginning and the last word is the first. *“Ye must be born again.” Oh, how the world is helpless without the! man with a changed heart. What a great vital message to all the eager souls of all cls and con- ditions. “Ye must be born again.” What greater business could the [ echurch have than to lead men to the one source and strength adequate both to generate the new life which they need, and provide that life with the forms of action through which it shall do its work and bear its fruit- age in the nation and throughout the world. Therefore we can best bring in a better world, by being ourselves bet- ter men while the broad social forces are at their renovating work under the hand of God, our personal privi- lege is to augment them by our own renewal in the image of Christ, the one Right Man and the Head of Hu- manity. His kind of world, the King- dom of God on earth, can only be built on His kind of men. If 1 want a new world I must be the kind of a man I want the new world to be. If T am not willing to pay this price, what honesty is there in my talk of a golden year? Uf men honestly want a world of good will and brotherhood, let them be the men St. Paul demands in his description in I. Thess of the Chris- tian Citizen—a man of purity, hones- ty, holiness, brotherliness, industry, modesty, thrift, courage In personal life and rela- tionship, in family and business each of us has his chance to Lasten a new human order. That is why we are bere in this church as an organized tellowship. This test will save you this disappointment ' wear and wear long after an ordinary shade would have to be discarded be- cause it contains absolutely no “filling.” Its base is a finer, more closely woven cloth, especially prepared to give you the most durable shade material it is possible to make. Rain will not spot it; sun will not fade it. Before you buy window shades again, make this test. You can tell whether a shade will give you the real service you have a right to expect or whether it is another of the kind that makes it impossible to keep your windows attractive. If you fold the ordinary shade material tightly, its ““filling’* of chalk and clay drops out. You can see cracks and countless pinholes! (See photograph No. 1 above.) The little strains of everyday use would cause just such disfiguring holes—once these shades were at your windows. Now fold Brenlin! or pinhole in it!
