Medal Philadelphia, July 3.—Dr. Anna Howard Shaw, honorary president of | the National American Woman's Suf- frage association, died at her home in Moylan, Pa., near here. at 7 ‘last evening. S&he was 71 years old. Dr. 8haw also was chairman of the woman's committee of the council of national defence, and recently received the Distinguished Service Medal her work durinz the war. She was taken ill in Springfield, Iil., about a month ago, while on a lecture tour with William H. Taft and Dr. Lowell, president of Harvard univer- sity, in the interest of the league of nations. Pneumonia developed and for t weeks she was in a Spring- fteld hospital. She returned to her home about the middle of June apparently had entirely recovered. Last Saturday she drove to Philadel- phia in her automobile and upon her | return said she was feeling ‘‘fine.” She was taken suddenly ill again yesterday with a recurrence of the disease and grew rapidly worse until the end. Her secretary, Miss Lucy E. An- thony, a niece of Susan B. Anthony, who has been with Dr, Shaw for thir- | ty vears, and two nieces, the DMisses Lulu and Grace Greene, were at her | bedside when she died. Arrangements | for the funeral have not been com- pleted. They probably will be an- nounced today. Members of the men's council from New Haven, Fairfield, Hartford, Litchfield, and New London counties, representing three political parties were present at the conference and were enthusiastic in their approval of a special session for the purpose of { ratifying the federal suffrage amend- | ment. Several men, including mem- bers of the present legislature, point- ed out that the failure to make proper school appropriations causes a serious need for a special session also. The council voted unanimously for an organixed effort to convince Gov- ernor Holcomb that public opinion amply justifies calling a special ses- of the legislature. Miss Ludington, president of the as- sociation, explained to the council the work which had already becn done to bring about a special s ion. The most important thing pointed out was the securing of a petition from the members of the legislature to the governor, requesting a special ses- The petition blanks, Miss Lud- ington 'said, had been sent by mail to all members of the legislatute. Thus far approximately one-half the { members had been heard from with a showing of 80 per cent favorable to a special session.
