WILLARD AND DEMPSEY FINISH TRAINING FOR BIG BOUT TOMORROW AFTERNOON—SENATORS POUND O . TRIM GIANTS ON POLO GROUNDS—CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING BOUT TONIGHT AT ST. MARY'S PLAYGROU NDS—B — 3 . P FIGHTERS ON EDGE | Somebody s Abvgs kgt Jo Out of L ife MBI West End oo $5,000 AS TRAINING ENDS Dempsey Practically Idle for Two Days—Willard Boxes Six Rounds g i i | | | "oledo, Ohio, July 3.—Jess Willard aocs not expect to beat Jack Demp- sey in the Bay View ring on IPriday by trying to crush his forty-three or weight advantage. a conference with Tex Rickard, the promoter, yesterday said that he would willingly follow out the rules of the Toledo Boxing commission to the letter. The rules provide that the boxers break clean at the command of the | referee. Willard says he will box ac- | cording to any rules which suit Demp- sey. He isn’t particular, he said, and | doesn’t want to be bothered by tech- nicalities, but will obey strictly the orders of Referee Ollie Pecord. Pecord, with Major Biddle and Rickard, the two judges, conferred | this morning with Willard, at which time " the rules were scrutinized and Pecord gave his instructions. Later the officlals will confer with Demp- sey and Kearns, his manager. When | the conference is over all doubtful questtons will be ironed out and there | will be no delay about the rules when | the men enter the ring. Willard plans to win the battle by superior punching. Referee Pecord warned the boxers at the conference against hugging and holding. Stalling tactics will not be tolerated by the officials. Pecord says that every one of the 36 minutes of this fight will be a minute of action. He knows the howl which will go up if the men start to kill time by the tactics | which have spoiled so many limited | bouts. Jack Skelly, the alternate ref- eree, arrived yesterday and will at- | tended the conference of the officials | and fighters. Skelly was out to see Willard and Dempsey work out yes- | terday afternoon. ? | down with pounds of The champion, in him more Dempsey didn’t do enough work yesterday afternoon at his training quarters to exercise an invalid. There was a fair-sized crowd at his camp at Point Place at 50 cents per spec- tator. Dempsey, with his trainer, Jimmy De Forest, appeared and for about thirty seconds the challenger | exercised on the pulley machine. Then | | | | | | he jumped into the ring and skipped | around at shadow boxing for about a minute. That minute and a half constituted the day’s show, and Dempsey jumped out of the ring and ran to the club- house. The crowd was disappointed | and displeased. They paid their | money to get at least a look, but | many of them hadn't even caught a | glimpse of him before he disappeared. It was the last day that either of ! the boxers will do any work, and this pretense of work was strongly | resented by the crowd. Willard seemed in a happy frame | of mind yesterday. He boxed three rounds with Jack Hempel and three more with Walter Monahan. The go ! with Monahan was a lively affair, and ' Jess got many smashes which were | delivered at full speed by his spar- ! ring partner. In the first round | Monahan hit the champion on the mouth with hard right swing and again opened up the coldsore which has cracked Willard's lip. The blood ! appeared for a moment, but this didn’t stop Jess, and he went after | Monahan harder than ever. Cuts May Be Opened. There is a danger that Willard may | get a hard smash from Dempsey on | the sore lip early in the fight, or that | he may get a poke which will tate the scratch above his left Both of these cuts will bother the champion if they are opened up. It | is the same case with Dempsey, who | got such a hard smash over the right ‘ eye from the Jamaica Kid that half | a dozen stitches were taken to close it up. The challenger's sparring partners have been very careful to avoid this place during their bouts, and it has not been molested since it healed. The scar of the cut is still notice- able, however, and if Willard delivers a hard blow on this optic early in the fight it is very apt to raise havoc ; with the challenger’s line of vision. Dempsey has been bathing his face with brine for the last few days to make the skin tough, and he has also | rubbed the places where the skin is tender with vaseline when he boxes | so that the blows will slip from his face easily. | There is a strong impression here | that Dempsey is trained down a bit too fine. Dr. Joseph J. Sweeney, of- | ficial physician of the boxing com- | mission, went to Dempsey’s camp to | give him an examination yesterday, but, as Kearns was not present, the | challenger would not consent to an examination at that time. He and De Forest demanded that Kearns be present before the examination took place. Dempsey will be thoroughly | examined before he goes into the ring. Dr. Sweeney gave Dempsey a | good looking over while he was at ‘he camp, however, and it is his opin- jon that the challenger is drawn very fine. He thinks that Dempsey is on the keenest edge and there is danger of his going stale. The fact that De Forest would not permit Dempsey even to work up to a point of perspiration yesterday aft- | ernoon shows that the challenger | must be handled with kid prevent his being overtrained. Demp- moy will have nothing but rest today, and he may be able to keep himself (Continued oh Page Thirteen) a irri- eye. gloves to | l | W.
