Tudor Walters, z member of parliament who has given much thought to housing, England faces a shortage of 500,000 houses in addition to her normal requirements F trades gone into other work, as all building operations ceased when the war started. Materials are at exor- bitant figures or unobtainable. Tt is much more difficult for a prospective small house owner to finance econ- struction that it was four and a half years ago. One of the plans suggested is that the government pay the householder the difference between what his housa will cost to construct immediately after peace is declared and its esti- mated value five years hence. Any plan that will result in largo expenditure of public money will be met with considerable opposition among members of the government. This was made very clear when a statement was made in the house of commons that the government should give all war holiday with full pay as one means of solvimgyghe tremendous problem of changing England from a war to a peice basis. At least one member of the government, - referring to that statement, said that the government could not wundertake any gigantic financial obligation in its effort to | bring*the transition period as quickly and efficiently as possible. have .
