Mr. Scoville’s announcemeat is as follows: “Our desire to mark the clase of this war with social celebration is only natural. Nevertheless the re- quest of the food administration that the fourth meal be discontinued is again called to the attention of our people. As long as millions of people are in danger of actual starvation, good taste as well as common hu- manity suggests the appropriateness of simple hospitality. The extra meal and lavishness in food cannot he de- fended while famine threateas Eu- rope.” By a closer ca-operation between housewives and grocers, Feederal Food Administrator Robert Scoville be- lleves the retailers will be enabled to get rid of some surplus stocks of the former wheat flour substitutes and at the same time the hausewi may secure bargains in these former sub- stitutes which are now selling cheap- er than wheat flour. Mr. Scoville has made the follow- iag announcement on the matter: “The repeal of the rule requiring the use of substitutes in bread seems to be consdered by many as a posi- tive order to use nothing but wheat bread. For nearly a year we have been using breads containing a great- er or less percentage of cereals other than wheat which have been pro- nounced wholesome and palatable. If the housewife and the baker will continue to use all these substitute flours, reducing the percentage if they choose, it will enable our deal- ers to dispase of their remaining stocks. These substitute flours are all selling below the cost of wheat, and there will therefore be a slight econ- omy in their use.” Piles Cured in 6 to 14 Days, Druggists refund money if PAZO OINTMENT fails to cure Itching, CITY ITEMS. The chemical warfare service, gas | defense division, issues the following: | Owing to the cessation of hostili- | ties, it will not be necessary to con- | tinue the saving of fruit pits and nut | shells, or the collection of nuts. | While some gas masks will be man- | ufactured, our recent cable reports from the Far East and reports from the campaign collection centers in the country indlcate that we have enroute a sufficient quantity of carbon-pro- ducing materials to complete our re- quirements. | With a desire to save the time, ex- | pense and labor attached to accum- ulating pits and sholls, we are now in- | structing the Red Cross to discontinue ; both collecting and accumulating, shipping only carloads now ready. This means that accumulations at any points, not constituting a carload should be disposed of for fuel or in any way desired. All barrels and other containers should be removed from sight at once. Reports indicate that practically every one in the country knows of the campaign and that a large number are actively engaged in the work. To save unnecessary labor and expense the widest possible publicity should be given to the fact that collections should cease. | The support given this campaign has been most gratifying. The call for materials to help heat the Hun gas has appealed to all and the re- sponse has been splendid. Peace has come too soon to judge the results, but in the short time which the cam- paign ran, some remarkable results were obtained. We are deeply grate- | ful to all for their unselfish efforts. HEAUTH BOARD MEETS. ! Plans For Slaughter House Addition Examined—To- Call For Bids. The board of health commissioners | held a special mecting last night to | examine the plans of the proposed additlon to the municipal slaughter house. The commissioners have had | expert advice from manufacturers of slaughter house machine equipment and it is believed that with new ma- chinery installed and the house en- larged, the facilities of the plant will be greatly increased. The growth of slaughtering in this city has been far beyond all expecta- tions and when the present building | was erected it was expected to be plenty large enough to accomodate that part of the city’s business. The present layout does not provide room for llving animals and this is one of the features of the new plan. Bids on the proposed changes will be called 465-—1353 MARKING HEALTH SURVEY. State Board Sends Two Nurses Here to Collect Data. Since the epidemic of influenza the state board of health has had several nurses busy taking a survey of gen- eral health conditions throughout the state. They have visited nearby towns and cities and now two of them have come to New Britain to make the surve; The two nurses working here are M Brooks and Miss Clark. Their work really consists in securing dats on the past epidemic, but they are also combining other features, such as investigating tenements, etc., with their work. There are regular cards to be filled out by these visiting nurses, telling the number of cases of influenza, the number of deaths that resulted, and the period of the epidemic. The making of a tenement survey will he watched by the residents of the city with much interest as it is a long while since such a work was done here. The last time such a survey was made was during the term of Dr. Henry T. Bray as health officer. The survey made then showed considera- ble crowding in the city tenements. Considerable time and effort has bheen spent by the board of health to rem- edy this condition and it has regu- lar inspectors employed to investigate and inspect tenemen Colds Cause Headaches and Pains.
