NEW BRITAIN DALY HERALD, LIFE OF GENERAL PERSHING CHAPTER XIX. (Copyright, 1918, by Willilam Fox) iy OR several weeks that portion of the sector remained The Fermans customary ‘strafe” or bombardment ut no damage had been done. On November 5, the Ger- ans appeared to have learned that mericans were occupying the sector pposite them. They opened with a [heavy barrage fire that cut off one fent occupied a'company of in- antry for special poses, and then raided [with a superior force. Three Ameri- cans were killed, five wounded, and [twélve captured in this engagement— he first since the United States en- hered the war. General Pershing gave convincing fJproof to his men that his high posi- ftion did not cut him off from close ouch with them, for as soon as hose soldiers who were wounded in the raid had been transferred to the base hospital he visited them gave to each a personal message of friendship and sympathy, at the same ime commending the fine American Epirit they had displayed in the fight. “I want to congratulate you,” he aid. ‘“We all envy you the honor pou have won. The whole army and @ nation are proud of you and your comrades for the fine bravery } showed in a most trying tuation. 'You are the men who have brought home to the people of the United States that they are really at war. I jope that you will have a very quick recovery. The day was at hand when the sol- diers of Gencral Pershing were to tackle the greatest task at arms the American nation had ever known. The little army that had bégun to ar- rive in France in July, 1917, by Jan- uary, 1918, had become a force of nearly half a million men, and tens of thousands were arriving weekly. The half million that Pershing had at his command were nearly all trained men capable of taking their part in the mighty conflict that had been raging for three years and a half. General Pershing knew that Ger- many would put all her available forces into a huge drive in the spring. resources were fast ebbing, and would probably be her last chance to force the issue before she was placed wholly on the defensive. Pershing felt that the American troops should bear their share in withstanding this great drive. Mountains of supplies had been collected by order of the general in preparation for this day. A railroad system that would rival many in this country had been constructed and equipped by Pershing’s engineers. Sup- ply depots covering acres of ground had been located in three base towns back of the American lines. New ports had been opened and put in operation to facilitate the handling of millions of tons of ship- ping that were arriving to supply the army. Milk Dealers and Dairymen Warned | By Food Administrator. Hartford, Oct. 29.—Beginning Nov. 1, Federal Food Adminstrator Robert Scoville, will begin to enforce rigidly the new sweet cream rule which bans cream de luxe or any cream contain- ing more than 20 per cent. butter fat. Since September 25, the Food Administration has had in operation a rule forbidding licensees to sell sweet cream containing more than 20 per cent. butter fat to consumers or to retail distributors of am, pro- vided, however, that the rule shall not prevent the licensee from selling sweet cream containing more than 20 per cent. butter fat to manufacturers for manufacturing purposes. Mr. Scoville has already communi- cated with a number of large milk distributors and dairymen who are licensed by the Food Administration and he believes that others who are not licensed will see the wisdom of observing the rule, a violation of which is likely to prove at least an annoyance in various ways to the un- licensed offender. AT THE HIGH SCHOOIL. The school administration has ar- ranged for a speclal time schedule In the afternoon providing for a long sixth period to be used by those who were absent through sickness before the closing of school, in making up lost work. This schedule will continue as long as there is need of it. Mr. Maorehead has taken advantage of this plan and will have special hikes for the boys who are free and wish to go. They will take place dur- the sixth period. The football management has ar- ranged a game with Crosby High school of Waterbury to be played in that city Saturday. The football schedule of this and other schools ha been broken up by the epidemic. N Britain will play Hartford High school November 9, Bridgeport High November 16, in Bridgeport and New Haven High November 23 in this city. Hartford and New Haven are league games. CABLE RATE SUSPENDED. Owing to a new ruling of the West- ern Union Cd., in the future anyone sending cablegrams to soldiers in France will have to pay the regular cable rates. This order was made necessary by the increased volume of government business daily passing through this country. Some time ago the company announced that a aew rate of 6 cents per word was to be put into effect during the war. Now it will be necessary for the local office to reject any cablegrams other thaa those rated as first class. The suspen- sion, however, is temporary. KENNEDY—MCcCARTHY. John J. Kennedy, U. S. Big Shipments Are En Route To Jobbers. Until These Arrive There May Be a Temporary Shortage. All Deals Postponed—Buy in Small Lots Only. RETAILERS CAN GET IM- MEDIATE SHIPMENTS DIRECT BY PARCEL POST. This advertisement is written on Monday, October 21st. It is directed to the attention of all distributors of Vick's VapoRub, both wholesale and retail. In an emerency such as the present epidemic-—our duty-—and your duty—is to distribute VapoRub in the quickest possible manner to those sections stricken by Influenza. We, therefore, call your careful attention to the following: DANGER OF SHORTAGE IF SUPPLY IS NOT CONSERVED On October 1st we had on hand at our Factory and in twenty warehouses scattered over the country, sufficient VapoRub to last us, we thought, until January 1st, allowing for a 50 cent. increase over last year’s sales, and not counting our daily output. This big excess stock had been accu- mulated during the summer months. Then this epidemic of Spanish In- fluenza hit us—and in the last 10 days this stock has vanished. At first we thought this tremendous demand would last only a few ‘days, but the orders have run: Wed., Oct. 16 Thurs., Oct. 17 .... i OCtRST S 0 Sat.,, Oet. 19 .... 45,8383 * Mon., Oet. 21 .... 77,706 * Up to Saturday, October 19th, we have actually shipped for this month $400,284.10, or over two million jars of VapoRub. THE PROBLEM NOW IS TO DISTRIBUTE VAPORUB QUICKLY Most of this tremendous quantity i still en route to the jobbers, freight and express are both congested nowadays, and it may be some time before this supply reaches the jobbers. In the meantime, therefore, it is necessary that we distribute, as widely as possible, the stock that we are manufacturing daily, together with that now on the jobbers’ and retailers’ shelves, in order that it may get to the Influenza districts quickly. Our normal output is about 4,000 dozen per day. We are putting on a night shift, but it will be a little”while be- fore that is producing. NEW WAYS TO USE VAPORUB In addition to the usual method of writing us daily telling of their success in using VapoRub in other ways, par- ticularly as a preventive. They melt a little in a spoon and inhale the vapors arising, or melt it in a ben- zoin steam kettle. Where the steam kettle is not available, VapoRub can be used in an ordinary--tea-kettle. Fill the tea-kettle half full“ef boiling water, put in half /‘a teaspoon’ of VapoRub from time to time—keep the kettle just slowly boiling and inhale | the steam arising. According to a Bulletin just issued by the Public Health Service, Dr. of this Service, recommends that the nose be kept greased as a preventive measure against the Infius enza germs.
