Returns reccived from Canada indicate that'the government | of Sir Robert Borden has been elected ! to administer Canadian afairs for an- l other five years, and that Sir Wilfria Laurier is as definitely defeated as in’ the reciprocity election of 1911. . Returns indicate that the French! part of Canada has gone heavily for! Sir Wilfrid Leurier, and Xmglish con- | stituencies have returned men who! will support the Uniom government measures, including conacription, and maintain Premier Borden i office. The vote has been very heavy everywhere, and the majorities are very large. The soldier vets, which will not be ascertained for seme days, will increase the already Reavy ma- Joritics of government members, and ‘will probebly increase the nutmber of government supporters elected. Official Teturns announced showed that with a few districts to be heard from the Unionists had won 128 seats and the opposition 87, with four seats deterred. THe province has sixty-five seats, and of these the government has won ouly three. Two ministers, the Hon. P. B. Blondin, the postmaster-general, now overseas with a French ‘Canadian battalion, and the Hon. Albert Se- vigny, secretary of state, are among those wha lost their seats. Seats will be found for both elsewhere. y The general impression here is that the province has gone.as evervbody expected it would—solidly ‘“‘quit-the- war,” pro-Laurier, and anti-British. The French Canadiams are highly elated at their cleanup, but in Mon- treal they express comsiderable an- noyance that the Hons. C. J. Doherty, minister of justice; C. C. Ballantyne, minister of marine, and Sir Merbert Ames, head of the Patriotic fund, have been elected by big majorities. MORGANS GIFT Metropolitan Museum of Art Is Given Residuo of Enormous Collection of Connofsseur. New York, Dec. 18.—J. P. Morgan yesterday presented to the Metropoli- tap Museum of Art the residue of his father's emormous art collection, in- oluding every article wiich he now has on loan at the museum with the single exception of-the bronss KEros from Boscoreale. This anmnouncement, made by the trustees at the close of their monthly meéetin; means the acquisition by the mustum of a col- lection which is regarded as in the same class with the emormous be- quest of the late Benjamin Altman: for it not only numbers several thou- sand different objects, but includes some of the finest collections that the great connoisseur ever made. With this gift the disposition of the great Morgan art colléctions is prac- tically at an end, and the fear felt when in 1916 and 1916 Mr. Morgan wold many of the finest works which his father had cellected, that the sreat assemblage of objects of < art would be ‘permanently dissipated, is dispelled. For it is sald that ever since the younger Morgan camse into possession of his father’s collections his policy has been to sell off ' only what the Metropolitan could obtain from other sources, and to reserve for it objects, such as the collection of Byzantine and mediaeval enamels and ivory which forms the finest part of the pwesent gift, which could not pos- sibly be found elsewhere. Many of the Morgan possessions bhave been sold, and many others given to the Morgan Memorial in the ‘| Wadsworth Atheneum at Hartford. PBut with the exception of the Ma- zarin tapestry, sold in 1236, none of the objects s0ld is irreplaceable. BRIDGEPORT HAS | A REAL SCANDAL Authorities Blamed for Five Hour Pistol Duel Sunday Morning Bridgeport, Dec. 18—William “Baby Doll” Thomas, pampered pet of the political powers holdiag sway in Fair- fleld county, and protected owner of an infamous Water street resort, is at the end of his career of vice. Today, held without bail at police headquarters, fear-crazed, and facing a probable charge of murder, the negro awaits the stern justice he has 80 long eluded. Thomas was arrested following a reign of terror which he instituted early Sunday morning. Fot six hours he gave desperate battle to, and held at bay an army of police. men who tried to arrest him in his barricaded establishment. Six persons were seriously injured In the . Two of them are ex- pécted to die. The remaining four |are in considerable danger and have only fair chances for recovery. More than 100 prisoners were taken with “Baby Doll” when the police finally overcame their resistance. They ! are held to testify in an inquest in | the city court room, by Coroner John | J. Phelan. With the exception of | the police, all witnesses were barred from the room, the purpose being to ]have each present only in his or her turn so that their testimony might 'not be affected by what they might ear. At the coroner's hearing, ‘‘Baby Doll” was not present but was repre- sented by Attorney Henry Greenstein, his counsel. The negro is kept alone in a cell, where he seems in a daze after the stirring events of Sunday. He escaped unscatched from the gun-battle which raged from 2:30 until 8:30 o’clock between the police on the one side, and himself and the frequenters of his place on the other. He 1s so afraid of the consequences of his misdeed, however, that he ig | hardly himself. \ “Baby Doll's” arrest, it was claimed today, will have more far-reaching effects than those which concern him alone. From, reliable sources it is learned that an expose threatens which will lay bare the whole rotten fabric constituting the political sys- tem which governs this country, and which is expected to reveal a condi- tion of corruption for which there is no precedent in political: history. Leaders of state-wide and even na- tional prominence will be inyolved, ac- cording to report, in the scandals which it is confidently belleved will be revealed in the investigations come. Some of the questions put to the Police Commissioner and Police De- partment are: “Why have you allowed Doll” Thomas to run from midnight until dawn, a cabaret show 365 days in the year, in violation of the liquor laws, at the same time illegally clos- to ing licensed cabarets which were con- ducted in strict accordance with the law? “Why have you allowed the opera- tion of a dice game on the two Pool old syrup for waf- e cakes and bread. your “Baby | Karo for . wholesome, fondant creams and chdcolates y making.
