NEW BRI TAIN DAILY HERALD SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1017. CHOOSE YOUR CAR AND SUPPLIES FROM , ADVERTISEMENTS ON PAGES 2, 3 AND 5 PROUDMAN PROCESS SAVES THE TIRES Republic Rubber Company’'s Chemists Announce Discovery Revolu- tionizing Treads. More than a year and a half ago | a routine report from the labortory was laid on the desk of the works -+ manager of the Republic Rubber Co. It gave the formula for a new com- pound to be tested out for tire treads. The element that makes it historic ‘was a note written under the heading “Remarks.” It said: “lI think we have something big here. Our tests show that it has 25 per cent greater tensile strength than any compound we know of. It also shows great heat resistance and ex- ceeding toughness. The next day that slip of paper went to the master compounder. He issued + the necessary instructions and in the | compounding room a sample mixed according to that formula. Neither the copounder nor the work- men realized that they had partici- was pated in one of the greatest forward | steps In rubber manufcture since vul- canization was perfected. They compounded the first rubber under what was afterward Chrlstened “the “Prodium Process.” They did not know that this process accomplished for rubber what the van- adium process did for steel. Not even the factory knew it at that time. That experimental bit of*rubber fol- lowed the course that many experi- menta compounds had followed before it. A few tires were made up with treads of the new compound. After the usual factory tests they were placed on the test cars. Tests Revealed Possibilities. When the reports of the testers be- gan to come in, an inkling of the im- | portance of the new reached the actory heads. The testers were enthusiastic. Said one report: “Great stuff. Drove over new rock road and tires did not cut at all. Fol- lowed city sprinkler on asphalt street and found that grip was greatly in- creased.” Test followed test. With each one, the enthusiasm in the factory grew. But it was realized that only thou- compound ..5ands of tires in actual service in alll “of the country under varying driv- ing conditions could give the final an- swer. The manufacturer of Republic Pro- dlum Process tircs for general sale was accordingly started, in a slow and cau- | That was slightly more tious way. than a yvear ago. Now we know that the Prodium WProcess does prolong the life of tires. Republic tires do undoubtedly last longer. They wear down smoothly and evenly, like a piece of fine steel. They are tougher and stronger, with greater spring and responsiveness. More than one .hundred thousand sets of Republic tires have been built by the Prodium process. The evidence is not only abundant sbut positive. Their performance has been tabulated and observed—as phy- sicians compile clinical and other rec- ords. And every hope we had for the Pro- dium Process tires has been realized. What the Prodium Process Is. The success of, Prodium Process tires has led to many Inquiries as to just what is this process. It is much easier to tell what it does than what it is. This is largely because the detalls must remain a factory secret. Rubber, as the world knows, is the sap or juice of the rubber tree, which cars with Prodium Process tires has|&rows in tropical countries, principal- ’had but a few minor cémplaints. 7 The merit of the tire has so ad- 1y the East Indies and Brazil. In manufacturi the ra rubber, , is combined with various oth- er ingredients, according to the pur- pose for which it is to be used. For instance, a compound (or mix- ture) which would be used for rubber hose would not do for automobile tires, The ecxperts know just what and they devise a compound which will be called on to fill. Has Great Strength. Rubber made of the Prodium Pro- { cess is so strong that a strip of it one inch square will support a weight of more than a ton and a half.” And yet its consistency is such that it grips the road tightly and is al- most immune to road cutting or chip- ping. Inspection Is Thorough. Relentless inspectors constantly ex- amine and test the product in every | phase of its making. | Even after tires have been complet- | ed and outwardly have passed every factory inspection, certain numbers | are torn so as to be sure that the ma- terials and workmanship are flawless. All of this makes for good tires. | But it is the treads of Prodium Pro- cess rubber that set Republis tires apart by themselves. ‘We know that Republic Treads show greater wear resistance than ordinary treads. We know that they stand up better under road shocks. We know that they wear down so evenly that many miles of service re- main in the tire after the staggard studs are worn off. We know that they do not heaat easily, nor do they become hard and brittle. And for these reasons we believe that Republic Prodium Process tires are the best made. pe And yet they cost no mére than or- dinary tires. THE. REPUBLIC TIRE CO., Youngstown, O, U. 8.
