At sundown this evening the Jew- ish New Year will begin, marking the vear 5677 on the Hebrew calendar. This day is known as Rosh Hashanah, or New Year, and is a religious rather than civil day, a holy day rather than a holiday. It is observed with im- pressive services, having the threefold character of retrospection, introspec- tlon and of looking forward. These three characteristics are set forth in the three sub names “The Day of ™ membrance,” the “The Day of Juds- ment,” and “The Day of the Blowing of the Ram’s Horn.” The New Year will be followed by ten days of penitence, which end with the Day of Atonement on Octo- Medicine Bottles For Household Use Witch Hazel, Peroxide Hydrogen, Alcohol, Aromatic Spirits Ammonia, Listerine, Rose Water and Glycer- ine,.Hair Tonic Toilet Water and Bay Rum. SALOON No One Is Injured, But Bartender Gets the Scare of His Life and Patron Is Arrested. Anthony Palaskas was arrested by Officer Walter Malona last evening on Elm street after, it is alleged, he fired four shots at Stanley Bushala, a bar- tender in Strobel's saloon. When rested the accused had his smokin revolver in his hand, but he offe no resistance to the policeman. Th morning he was charged with drunk- enness, breach of the peace, assault and discharging firearms without a permit. He pleaded not guilty and on request of Lawyer P. F. McDonough the case was continued until tomor- row. Witnesses say that previous to Lhe shooting, Palaskas threatened to stab a man in the saloon and later returned wih the gun. ~ Some of the witnesses state that he stood in front of the sa- loon and fired wildly into the air, while others declare that he tried to shoot the bartender. The latter so claims, and says that the only thing that saved him from being shot was the fact that he grabbed the shooter’s arm and dodged around him as the bullets went by. Judge Meskill imposed a fine of §15 and costs on John Busalaviecz, charged with breach of the peace in a saloon yesterday, and $5 and costs on Walter Saviski, also mixed up in the fracas. The case of Tonio Attilio, charged on two counts with assaulting Clem- enti Pasaeno and with the illegal sale of liquor at his home on Myrtle street, was continued until tomorrow on re- quest of Lawyer McDonough.
