An abstract of Dr. Cros: mon follows: ““This is the gospel of labor Ring it, ye bells of the kirl, “The Lord of Love came down from above To live with the men who work.’ ‘“Jesus Christ of Nazareth was both carpenter and thinker—true fellow therefore of all who work whether with brain or hand. It is not the place of the church to solve the prob- lems of our industrial ferment, nor | the place of the church to build the fabric of the economic life; but it is the function of the church of Jesus Christ and of his servants to place upon business structures the spirit level of his teachings, and to hang heside the buildings of our economic system the plumb-line of his ideal of life. The churches have taken a de- cided stand upon many economic is- sues. Witness the declaration of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, which represents 19,000,000 of people connected with thirty-three Protestant denominations in this country. Of the sixteen items in the declaration we quote but five: “The churches must stand for equal rights and complete justice for all men in all stations of life. “For the protection of the worker from dangerous machinery, occupa- tional diseases, and mortality. “The right of employes and em- ployers alike to organize; and ade- quate means of conciliation and arbi- tration in industrial disputes. “The gradual and reasonable re- duction of the hours of labor to the lowest practicable point, and that de- gree of leisure for all which is a condition of the highest human life. The health, so- cial standing, future prospects of fam- ilies are too often the stake and the many losers are crushed for the gain of one. Again, the handicaps are too great to make the competition more than a farce—as one writer has put it, “the star racers are furnished with motoreycles, the novices run on foot.” Co-operation Spells Success. “But signs of the regeneration business are not wanting. ‘The rude hand of economic necessity is for- tunately on the side of the moral ideal shoving and jamming and hauling the obstinate factors around into their places.’ Competing capitalists found their strength enhanced and their business in larger enterprises made possible by co-operation. Does it reward or pen- alize neighborliness? Neighborliness was the principle which Jesus laid down as fundamental. Can you live by this in your business? If you can- not, you must either confess that business or Jesus is a moral failure. Which? There Ts Alwhys Some Gain. “Many maxims of business might be cited, and many of action which are contr y to the spirit and teaching of Je: Christ ‘We note one. ‘Competition is the lifa of trade’ This depends upon the character of the competition. In ath- letics there is good competition when a hundred men prepare for and com- pete in a race. Two or threc only receive prizes, but those who fell short of a prize gained deepened chests, stronger muscles and health- ful exercise. In the competition of workmen for leadership only a few get the promotion but those who competed for the place are better workmen and worthier for the com- petition. Competition which leaves the competitors who are defeated at least no worse off than they were before is good. Most business com- petition is like the gladiatorial com- bats of old; the defeated is left a bloody corpse. Such competition is not born from above. Business Completion Deplored. “Modern business competition is to life principles be deplored for many reasons. The | , co-operating to match the organ- ization of the capitalist, find, when thiey strike, if they had not painfully realized it before, that they are poor- ly off without the co-operation of the employers. And the poor com- mon people devoutly wish for the co-operation of both employers and worker with him in reducing the high cost of competition. The most ser- ious charge which can be brought against socialism or the labor union is that they emphasize class strife. “A new economic order has de- veloped in which organization ana massing of industrial units are a prominent feature. The great moral objection to this lies in the owner- ship and control of all this by a re- latively small group of men. We can see the -way out and the spirit of brotherliness and neighborliness must prevail—God wills it. Washington Gladden says: ‘The one thing for us to be sure of is that God has a way for human beings to live and work to- gether, just as truly as He has a way for the stars over our heads and the crystals under our feet; and that it is man’s chief. end to find this way and follow it."” Weekly Notices.
