If this isn't a record, a record? 51000000*—6 13 1| AFTER HEINIE Robins and Braves Want Star Bats- man—Negotiations for Trading Reaches Deadlock. Chicago, Aug 22.—Negotiations for a trade between Braves and Cubs in- | volving the transfer of Heine Zim- | merman to Boston reached a deadlock | yesterday after Manager Stallings had confered for hours with President Weeghman and Manager Tinker. The Boston offer for Zimmerman, though s not given out, fell short of what ub management considered an equivalent for the third baseman, and a counter offer by Manager Tinker to trade Zimmerman for Maranville did | not prove acceptable to Stallings. The | Boston club, it is understood, offered | to give Chicago two outfielders or a | young pitcher. | The Cubs' outfield i settled temporarily problem was yesterday, how- ever, by the signing of Artie Hofman, | | former Cub and recently with the | Yankees, to flll in until the recovery of Joe Kelly, who is sufferfing from a twisted ankle. The Boston club still has competi- tion for Zimmerman, as Manager Robinson and President Ebbets of the Brooklyn Nationals yesterday renewed negotiations. The Brooklyn offer, it wa, id, was no more accepable to | the Cub management than Boston’s . 'WOT? POSE FOR THE CINEMA? "ORRIBLE! So Vulgar, Yknow, It Simply Shawnt Be Done London, Aug. 22.—Ever since it was announced that the ministers had con- sented to allow a cabinet meeting to be filmed by a syndicate of British | producers there has been consider- {able discussion as to whether the cab- inet’s dignity would be lowered by thus revealing its secrets to vulgar | gaze. | The scheme is said to have orig- | inated with “some distinguished wom- E who in discussing a charity in which the king and queen were keenly interested decided to approach a film company with a view to inducing it to produce a picture, the public exhibi- | tion of which would benefit this char- lity. M uith approached one of | the leading men in the industry. The idea was received with enthusiasm. A scheme was drawn up for a film which i e One Bottle-- Yes-One Glass will convince you of the measure of good taste, purity and nourishment this beverage contains. s EnrioiD 8T e ing AupERT FiSCRER BRES Wasrroan.o \ Get acquainted with this, Con- necticut’s finest, TODAY. ON LAP AL LOUIS W. PO, HOLY DL BELOLN, hEKVISKS & COp HEN- BANN SCHMARR, W. J. McCARTHY. would show the public the whole ma- chinery of war administration, includ- ing a meeting of the cabinet. Mr. Asquith, The Ivening News says, for some time was opposed to the {idea, thinking it would be undignified | for ministers in council to pose for the movie pictures, although it was | pointed out to him that presidents of the United States had been filmed. Lord Lansdowne also objected, but when it was represented to them that | its exhibition would be of immense in- terest to the British empire and a charity in which the king and queen were interested would greatly benefit, | he and the other objecting ministers consented. It is understood that all | necessary apparatus was set up in the council chamber, including arc- | lamps of 520,000 candle power. Now, according to The Daily Chron- icle’s parliamentary correspondent, the whole scheme will likely have to be abandoned owing to the opposition ' in parliament. The correspondent sa; No one can understand how the members of the cabinet could ever have been induced to lend themselves | to a proceeding so little consonant with the dignity and high authority of the ! executive body of the British empire. Members of the House of Commons are more jealous of the prestige of the cabinet than is the cabinet itself, | and on the motion for adjournment tomorrow (Tuesday) plain speaking | may be expected on the sub- ject. The intention was that tomor- row’s sitting of the cabinet should be filmed, but owing to the widespread indignation that has heen expressed the project has been deTeated, and at tomorrow's discussion it will likely be abandoned. “There is much to be said for filming | a historic meeting of the cabinet dur- ing the war for the enlightenment of posterity. What cannot be tolerated is the filming of the cabinet for the purposes of popular entertainment, to be shown on the screen alternately to ’ a cowboy’s romance or a Charlie Chap- lin display. Nothing better calculated to vulgarize the cabinet could well be | imasgined.” t $250,000,000 United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland TWO-YEAR 5% SECURED LOAN GOLD NOTES DIRECT OBLIGATIONS OF THE GOVERNMENT.
