WILL REESTABLISH BOUNDS OF CITY Engineers Working on Survey For Proposed Map Again Deter- mine Line: In connection with the survey for the city plan map city engineers have about finished work on the outskirts and have run out the city bounds on all stdes finishing where they began on the Southington Iline mnear Shuttle Meadow. City Engineer Hall says it will be necessary to replace lost monuments In many cases to clearly jndicate just where the lines exist There is a statute which has been on the books for many years which makes it obligatory for towns to de- termine the bounds by perambulation every five vears, but in many places the law has fallen into disuse, the town officials neglecting to carry out thelr duty in this matter. The result is that the original bounds are lost, be- coming overgrown with brush, and in some cases farmers not realizing the value of the markers dig them up and divert the stones to other purposes. As a r 1t the bounds become vague and in some cases are entirely lost with the result that land is taxed adjoining towns by misiake and in some cases the same land is taxed in two towns. The resurvey of the city lines is of prime importance in pre- paring for the city map as the engi- neers use the lines for a guide in sur- veying the various tracts of land in the outskirts of the city gradually working towards the city proper. En- gineer Hall says much data in regard to the ownership of property in the country districts has already been se- cured, but until the survey is comple- ed no attempt will be made to draw a map. The entire regiment will make the trip and the boys are looking forward to it with keen anticipation. Exciting At last the old ad again and you will succeed” has proven a reality in camp. Since ar- riving here the men have been looking ! far and wide for suitable mascot with but little succc At last when hope was being displaced by despair, our hunt scemed at an end when a puppy, a scant six inches long a kitten, wandered rumored that when ant Chamberlain was entertain- ing.on the hill in < of the camp on his occarina the pup, passing by, re- ceived an earful of the jovous strains E they were being wafted over the cvening breezes and decided it would remain and hear some more of the wonderful music and so ran this way. Company M finally claimed the animal after the boys had selected at least a dozen cognomens for the welcome comrade. Surely, he would have been a good acquisition o sooner had the mongzrei r ] self familiar with his quarters than he scented a rat from the supply tent, a rat that must have seen service in the Mexican war as evidenced by its gray hai For- tunately we have not encamped in anything more than a pseudo-civilized communi so that a rat chase did not ymbolize the feminine shrieks, tent pole creaking and confusion that might have occurred in a camp such as Niantic. The bovs made use of the bayonets: worked up a good sweat and finally speared the rodent. Band Displays Enthusiasm. This evening the remnants of the band made itself heard. The lads that started for a full night's sleep for- got their good resolution the air became rife wiht musi ¢ band re- cruits and seven r started to march the entire length of regimental street playing “America, I Love You which filled the camp with ms enthusiasm and a snake dance shirt-tail parade followed. There are all sorts of cerning our stay here. clined to believe that other quarters will be given us, some think that we will be packing for north in a short while and others wonder how cold it will be in the winter. Take your pick. Preparations for-the building of a new camp are still being rushed. Tel- ephone lines and clectric light connec- tions have almost reached to the first regiment camp. There was another inspection of camp today and the men took care that was in first class condition. Corporal Ogren a Teal Mexican. We had a close view of a real look- ing Mexican soldier tod: Sombrero, hat band, rifle, belt, beads and jamas made Corporal Eddie look like the real thing. Every av able camera in the vicini{y kept Eddie in the limelight and hot sun in order that such a perfect disguise should not go unnoticed. Eddie now is dreaming of the da when he will master the Spanish lingo and cross the border as a spy. An interesting sight was Sergeant Powers and myself this morning as we were traversing the main street of the town. We were at- tracted by a drove of burros packed sky high with wood which were being prodded slowly along the thoroughfare by an old decrepit Mexican leading astern a young antelope which was resisting with all its energy. The bur- ros were not new, by any means, (they have been the cause of many an hour's loss of slep) but the antelope’s cap- ture had much curfosity for many of the men here. Mutache Hobby Discarded.
