London, July 80.—A new epoch in shipbuilding which has been inaugur- ated by the formation of a “Standard- ized Ship Construction Company” with a capital of $1,500,000 had its incep- ited States whence the first suggestion of standardization emfanated. The plans are provided for the construction at Chepstowe of ten large ships at the same time, of standardized type, 8,000 tons dea<11 tion from the T standard parts of hulls and engines. The scheme is backed by the lead- ing shipping interests of Great Brit- ain an the idea has been approved In shipping circles where the dearth of vessels is being badly felt. The craft to be built will be well suited for the South Wales ports, to carry coal out ana bring back azain. This preparation for current and after war needs will probably soon ex- tend to an empire shipbuilding devel- opment and in addition to one large British firm already enzaged on ship- building in Canada, three others, Vick- Cammell Laird and John Brown and company of Clydebank, are re- ported to be planning to start ship- building in that part of the empire. It is thought that these ideas or rumors if they come to fruition will be in a large measure solve the difficulty of congestlon of labor and output in many of the crowded areas of Great Britain, as the firms mentioned are ers, Store Closes at Noon Fridays During August. the home to receive consideration. TURKS AGAINST TARIFF Criticize Increase of Duty on Sugar, Maize Barley and Wheat and Rice When Imported. (Correspondence of the Asso. Press.) Berlin, July 21.—The new differ- ential tariff which has been adopted in Turkey is meeting with much orl- ticism from Turkish economists themselves, according to the German Oriental Correspondence bureau. The increase in the duty on sugar-beet cultivation, for instance, is declared to have been a mistake as the pre- vailing dryness of the climate makes Turkish soll ill-adapted to growing sugar beets, and the result of the duty therefore will be merely to in- crease the price of sugar. Similar criticism is made against duties of 20 to 60 per cent. ad valorem on maize, barley, wheat and rice. The critics say the soll and climate of Turkey are better adapted for grow ing far more valuable orops, and pecially cotton, than for the grains named. The resuit of the high du- ties, they say, will be that cotton and other valuable products will be neg- lected in favor of products of less { value and even the latter will be of poor quality.
