There were 463 brick huildings added, representing an esti- mated expenditure, according to the building permits, of $5,260,747: ¢ frame buildings of the value of $3,251,970, and $690,114 for repal and alterations. The extension of the fire zones in the last {wo yvears has caused an inere in the construc- tien of brick buildings and legislation by the council was direeted with the view of reducing the fire hazard. This fire reserve force will also be a school for future permanent men needed. This board has, without any e pense to the city, fitted up a repair shop equipped with all the necessary tools far the repair of any of our motor fire apparatus There are many first class mechanics in the de- partment who are much interested and anxious to learn more thoroughly the details of motor construction, ears L more the horses. just ti sup- ing at the fire tus Pire Alarm System. In recent vears vast improvements | have been made in fire alarm signal stems and in the opinion of this Loard W Britain will do well to consider the purchase of the more modern equipment. The necessity of getting alarms promptly and cor- rectly appeals to all. A recent in- ventory shows an investment of £10,000 in the fire alarm system. There are sixty fire alarm hoxes and forty-five miles of wiring in the system. More fire alarm boxes are required. In the opinion of the members of this board Superintendent Cooley should have a motor car, also it is necessary for efficiency in his depart- ment that he should have a compe- tent assistant to aid him in his work ai all times. The several miles of wire to be laid soon means consider- able expense for horse hire, which empha the need of a car and con- scquent saving to the city. Economy of Motors, The cconomy in motor equipment has been proved to the satisfaction of the board of public safet By the n.ost careful purchasing the cost for upkeep has been held down to $200 a horse in spite of the advance in prices. Therefore it cost $400 for cach horse drawn equipment, but now the cost is nearer' $700 per pair of horses, There is alsa additional cxpens the of the ap- paratus. The growth of the city h, rapid that for ve: the department has been backward in its .uota of men, according to the accepied ha of police protection, namely one pa- trolman to every 1,000 of city popu- lation. Through the addition of the ten additional men to be appointed this year New Britain will arrive near the accepted ratio of police protec- tion and thereafter by the appoint- ment of two patrolmen annually the department will be kept up, Records of the police deparfment | emphasize the growth of the city. 1907 there were 1,064 arrests and 1,618 last vear, or a gain of about sixty per cent. TIn 1908 the depart- ment began the keeping of records of complaints and then there were 1, For the vear ending March 1916, there were 2,666 complaints.
