He fought loyally for President Porfiro Diaz until his fall, and when Diaz was no longer chief executive, Huerta fought for Fran- cisco de la Barra, the Provisional President. After Francisco Madero was elected Huerta found it to be his duty to support one who had so long fought as a rebel. His loyalty was not challenged until the Felix Diaz revolution in Mexico City in Febru- ary 1913, when the Madero govern- ment was completely overthrown and Huerta himself elevated to the presi- dency. Huerta devoted himself to the military career at a very early age. Born at Chihuahua in 1854, he en- tered the Military Academy at Chap- ultepec at the age of 17 and passed through the full course to graduation in 1875, when he was commissioned second lieutenant of engineers. Dur- ing his academic term he was known for his 'predilection for scientific studies, particularly astronomy and mathematics. Captain of Engineers. When Porfirio Diaz began his reor- ganization of the Mexican army Huer- ta was promoted Captain.of Engi- rank devised the plan for a Mexican Gen- eral Staff Corps. He was an active member of the Military Map Commis- sion created to draft a staff map of Mexico on a large scale and he had charge of all the astronomical work of the Commission, leading exploring and surveying parties over the wild- | est regions of the republic. During the ensuing years Huesta saw much active service. In 1901 he left the staff and took command of the infantry [in the campaign against the Yaqui Indians. After this campaign he was again put in charge of the Genera] Staff's topo- graphical work in Sonora. He par- ticipated “in subsequent Yaqui cam- paigns and also in the campaign in Yucatan against the Maya Indians. As a reward for his Indian service Huor- ta was given the rank of Brigadier- General and once more detailed to the General Staff. Made Major General. Huerta commanded all the detached Government forces in the ‘state of Guerrero at the beginning of the Ma- dero revolution, When Madero ac- ceded to the Presidency, General Huerta was sent back in Morelos with a force to put down the Zapata re- bellion, As a result of ill-feeling growing out of this campaign Huerta was recalled. Subsequently he led the army sent against Orozco and was In command at the battle of Bachimba. For this service he was promoted to Major-General. He was then recalled to the capital and given leave of absence because of an af- fection of the eyes, and thus did mot take part in the suppression of the first uprising led by General Felix Diaz in October; 1912. In the second Felix Diaz revolution, which resulted in the overthrow - of the Madero government, Huerta was immediately called to active command as the senior ranking general then in ‘the capital. He escorted Madero from Chapultepec Castle to the Palace on the first of the ten days’ fighting and V/as placed in entire command of the forces of the government. He di- rected the government troops during all the subsequent fighting, and conduct of these operations led to severe criticism on the part of Ma- dero’s friends; It was charged -that he did not carry out the operations with'any spirit, that he disobeyed the commands of President Madero, and’| 1 before General Blanquet entered the ‘city it was this conference which sealed the fate of the Maderos. Reocognized as President. Huerta was the moving spirit in the consummation of the plot that re- #ulted in the seizure of the person of President Madero and his brother ~Gustave. The climax came in April. when some American blue- jackets were thrown into jail at Vera Cruz. They were quickly: released but Huerta refused a formal salute to the flag and, on April 12, American sailors and marines occupied Vera Cruz after street fighting in which a number were killed. C. And so, Bleftherios Sykeotis is of- ficially listed in the records of the United States Marine corps as “Liberal Scott.” Sykeotis, who is a naturalized American citizen, adopted the name of Liberal Scott hecause of his great admiration for Harry Lauder, he says, and for the further reason that few persons have ever correctly pro- nounced the name he abandoned. as LINER VERDI SAILS.
