Benny Kauff, leading hitter of the Federal League, who will be eagerly sought when peace terms are signed, might have been with the Pirates if Barney Dreyfuss had exercised some of the keen,. sound judgment which has made him famous in baseball. He offered $2,500 for Kauff ihen Benny was with Hartford, but the Connecticut club asked $5,000. This sum Barney refused to and when the drafting time came around he did not even put in a claim for him. Indianapolis did, and got him for $760—the drafting price. Then Benny made his famous leap to the outlaws. But Kauff was not the only star lost to the Pirates. Grover Cleve- land Alexander, the star of the Phil- lies, could have been had for little money. Alexander was with Indian- apolis for a while, and was recom- | mended to Dreyfuss, but to no avail, j and went back to Syracuse for more seasoning. ‘With the Salt City team Alexander developed wonderfully, |and the Phillies got him at the drafting price of $750. ——— e e say, For every day satisfaction we want Yyou to try our Dairy Products, Milk, Cream, Butter, Cottage Cheesec. ‘We have three deliveries; prompt service. Former Champ Draws a Six Months Layoff For Contract Violating. New York, Dec. 21.-—Chairman Frederick A. Wenck of the State Ath- letic commission yesterday carried out his threat against Ad Wolgast the for- mer lightweight boxing champion and inflicted six months’ sus sion on the western pugilist. Realizing that he had little chance to save himself from punishment, Wolgast did not appear at the special meeting of the commis- sion at 41 Park Rcw, and the sentence was pronounced against him in his ab- sence. The penalty will not seriously affect the former title holder, as he contemplates an early return to the west, where the commission’s ruling will not be effective. ‘Wolgast was charged with having engaged in a boxing contest at Atlan- ta last week, which was a direct viola- tion of his contract with the Harlem Sporting club, which stipulated that ‘Wolgast must not engage in any bout until after he had boxed IL.each Cross at the Harlem Sporting club last Fri- day night. Chairman Wenck did not think the public had received a fair deal, as there was nothing apparent in Wol- gast’s condition to prevent his contin- uing ten rounds against Cross. In- stead Wolgast quit the contest just after the half-way mark had been reached, 5 LOSES CAPTAIN, PENN E John Mann Leavs niversity to En- gage in Business, Philadelphia, Penn., Dec, 21.—John Mann, second baseman and captain of next spring’s baseball team at the uni- versity of Pennsylvania, has left col lege to engage in business. Mann's loss is a severe blow to Penn's base- ball prospects, for he was a star in- fielder as well as a heavy slugger. Mann’s successor probably will not be elected until after the team has played a few of its gamesy If a senior member of the team is chosen, as is usually the case, the pos- | sible candidates for the captaincy are Larry Murdock, Lou Shimpf, Chick Valliant and Bud Eichelberger, i WANTED—Competent maid for gen- FOR SALE—Edison Phonograph with ! 60 good records.
