Co. (Inc.) 'COL. BROMWELL ENDS LIFE WITH BULLET ‘Head of Army Engineer Corps Stationed at Honoluln Honolulu, T. H., Dec. 11.—Lieuten- .ant Colonel Charles S. Bromwell, head of the army engineer corps here, shot and fatally wounded himself yes- terday. He died two hours after the shooting. Mrs. Promwell and her daughter are in the United States, where the latter is attending school. The colonel was alone in his resi- dence when the shooting occurred. Son of ex-Congressman. Cincinnati, O., Dec. 11.—Lieutenant Colonel C. S. Bromwell was the only son of ex-Congressman Jacob H. Bromwell of this city. He had seen extensive service in the United States engineering corps since his graduation from West Point in 1890. For several years he was military aid to President Roosevelt with the temporary rank of colonel. He was in charge of the engineering work on public works of various kinds in different parts of the country and held the position for a time as superintendent of public buildings and grounds in Washington. He was 46 years old and was born at Newport, Ky. Wife Planning Visit. Bloomington, Ill, Dec. 11.—Mrs. Charles S. Bromwell left Blooming- ton a few days ago for San Francisco, from which port she was to sail for Honolulu to join her husband. Sha had been visiting here with her moth- er, Mrs. M. L. Scott. Mrs. Scott said last night that Scott Bromwell, Lieu- tenant Colonel Bromwell's son, is at- tending Harvard, and the daughter, Mildred, is attending a grils’ school near Washington. Mrs. Scott is a former of the Daughters Revolution. president of the American REV. DR. BARNUM DEAD. Missionary in Turkey Former Connec- ticut Man. New York, Dec. 11.—Rev. Dr. Hen- ry Samuel Barnum, for many years a missionary in Turkey and publisher of a religious peridical at Constan- tinople, died yesterday at Verona, N. J., at the age of 78. He returned from the East last summer after the Turkish authorities suppressed his paper, which was printed in part in the Armenian language, ostensibly be- cause the war made its delivery im- possible. Dr. Barnum, who was born at Conn., was graduated from Yale and Auburn Theological Semin- ary.
