LABOR RECORDS BROKEN. More Situations Secured Than Ever At Free Employment Bureau. The month of October has again broken all records in the amount of business transacted by the Hartford Free Employment Bureau, the high- water mark reached the previous , month being exceeded by nearly nine per cent. in the number of situations secured. In October, 1914, the num- iber of applications for employment | was 899, compared with 945 in the , month just passed; the number of ap- | plications for help was 218, compared with 724 last month, an increase of nearly 240 per cent.; the number of situations secured in October, 1914, was but 175, compared with 550 last October, an increase of 214 per cent. The daily average number of persons called for by employers last month was twenty-nine, as compared with eight in 1914, eight in 1913, nine in 1912, and eight in 1911. The daily average number of positions reported filled was twenty-two, as compared with seven in 1914, 6.5 in 1913, 6.5 in 1912, and 6.6 in 1911. The tremendous increase in busi- ness is due to the continuously heavy ) demand from farmers for help in har- | vesting. crops. While the office sup- plied but thirty-seven farm hands a year ago, this year 270 farm hands were furnished, men being sent out in numbers as rapidly as they were called for, affording the farmers prompt ser- vice in moving their crops. Another record was made in the number of nationalities (26) repre- sented by those securing employment. A gratifying increase was noted in the number of laborers given employ. ment over a year ago, 108, as com- ! Food REG. U. S. PAT. OFF, Grand Prize, Panama-Pacific Exposition San Francisco, 1915 pared with twenty-five, requisition be- ing frequently made on the office by the coal companies and for freight handlers. The wages for farm hands in the height of harvesting was $2.00 for day workers and the prevailing rate at present is §1.75. The wages for freight handlers and coal shovelers has advanced from $1.76 to $1.85. A slightly increased supply of housemaids who receive from $4.50 to $6.00 is noted, but the cheaper grade of girls is almost impossible to secure. The office was able to fill only about one call in five for housework girls.
