Leonard eplogle of this city, who started his | iness carrer when eleven years old, s a water boy at less than $5 a week the Cambria mills at Johnstown, [Pa. " Mr. Replogle, who is now thirty- ight years old, bid against his old perior officer, William H. Donner, the block of stock and won it after liations in Philadelphia which ate f,m day and virtually all might al days and nights. mght From the Pennsy. - "The stock was bought from the dennsylvania Railroad company, awvhieh formerly owned 450,820 shares lof the 900,000 issued, a controlling in- jterest in the Cambria company. The Jcapitalization of the Cambria Steel xcompany is authorized at $50,000,000, but only $45,000,000 (900,000 shares ©of a $50 par value), were issued.| Of the railroad original 51 per cent. holdings of Cambria Steel, Mr. Don- ner had already acquired about 112,- | 000 shares. This was secured in two Iots; one of 56,000 on which he had fan option, and the other of the same ‘amount, on which he acquired a con- ditional option. . The condition was that he should find a purchaser for the raflroad’s oldings of Pemnsylvania Steel stock. ‘Donner is president of both the pbria and Pennsylvania Steel com- ius of Bethlehem Steel, wanted the Pennsylvania Steel properties it was said, to combine them with his Beth- lehem Steel plant, and thus form theé nucleus of another gigantic steel mer- ger. Conflict of Interests. Mr. Donner’s interests crossed with this plan and Mr. Donner won in the quest for the Pennsylvania Steel stock. He then tried, so it is said to obtain the remaining Cambria stock own by the rajlroad. Three weeks agdl Mr. Replogle, who resigned as vice presi- dent of the Cambria company March 1, began negotiations for the pur- chase of the remaining Cambria stock held by the railroad. ¥From Water Boy to -Vice President. During the 27 years he had been with ‘the Cambria company he had risen from water boy to occupy al-] most every position successively in line to the vice presidency.’ He knew the property thoroughly and wanted it. In the meantime, however, the Pennsylvania railroad no longer con- trolling the Cambria company after Mr. Donner had exercised his options sold some of the stock in the - open market, at a time when Cambria was at the crest of its recent rise. Negotiations were begun for the purchase of the remainder and ended today in the transfer of the stock to Mr. Replogle. So far as is known Mr, Replogle is the largest single stock- holder. Whether a- fight for the con- trol will develop is to be seen. ‘The Cambria property consists of large steel works, mills and blast fur- naces at Johnston, Pa., and extensive iron ore holdings in Michigan. ‘What Will He Do ‘With Tt? In addition, the company operates the Cambria Steamship company and the Manufacturers’ Water company of Johnston. . What is to be done with the Cambria property under Mr. Rep- logle’s management—if he succeeds in obtaining sufficient additional stock to give him control—is yet to be di- vulged. It is regarded as unlikely, however, that the mammoth plant will be put to work extensively. on munitions orders for the allies, .an pah Charles M. The heavy addition to the freight work has made it a necessity for the railroad officials in this city, to allow cne more crew for the switching force, and on Monday it is expected that the new crew will. be set to work. Yardmaster Halliday this morning said, “We are handling more freight than ever in the history of New Britain. It was piled up steadily on us during the past month.” With the addition of the new crew ‘there will- be . four switching gangs at work, the first time that this has ever occurred here. CONCERT AT KEENEY'’S- A grand concert and entertainment will be given at Keeney’s theater at 2:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon un- der the auspices of St. Andrew’s Lith- uanian church. Local talent will pro- vide music, both instrumental, and among the singers will be Mrs. M. T Crean, who enjoys a wide reputation as a vacal artist. The entertainment will include motion pictures of local interest and in a way will give a pan- oramic history of the Lithuanian peo- ple of this city. The proceeds will be devoted to church uses.
