Chavez, Eduardo Perez, Miguel Peralta, Frdancesco Robdri- quez and Ramon Villalobos, sentenced to be hanged for murder between 11 o'clock yesterday morning and 4 yes- terday afternoon, at almost the last moment got a respite from the board of pardons and paroles. With every legal obstacle to their | hanging set aside, the board granted a nine weeks’ respite, in order taat the | men’ might be hanged singly instead of together, and so recommended to Governor Hunt, who had opposed in- flicting the death penalty with every resource at his command. It was said that if the board had refused to grant a respite, Warden Sims would have resigned, thus block- ing the hangings, which under the law must be performed by the warden or his deputy, and there is no deputy. The board was sald to have voted two to one for the respite. Wiley Jones, state attorney general, it was said, stood out for an immediate hanging, WANTED—Immediately, 8 boys to work on packing bench.
