Mayor George A, Quigley, in plaining his veto of the electric light- | ing project as stated in yesterday's ! Heraid, has given his reasons in { writing and these will be presented at the next meeting of the common | council. { The mayor's reasons follow: | Common Loundl—«uty of New Bri- ; tain: Gentlemen:— Pursuant to the authority vested in | me I have this day disapproved the { action of your honorable body in adopting the resolution relating to the matter of municipal lighting. I have disapproved your action for the reason that I do not believe that the city could embark in the business of municipal lighting under a cost of $2,000,000. In order to raise this amount of money it would be neeessary to issue bonds and when we realize that New Britain has now a bonded indebted- ness of about $3,500,000 and a grand list of less than §45,000,000, we can readily see that our debt would be out of all proportion to our grand list. Further. we must face in a very short time the sewage disposal pro- blem which it has been estimated will necessitate a bond issue of between $400,000 and $600,000 and the ever present problem of school accomo- dation which will no doubt necess- itate a bond issue in the near future ex- M. Then again our knowledge of mu- nicipal lighting is so meagre that I do not believe that this matter should be seriously entertained until the full- est information possible is obtained regarding municipal lighting. Further on April 20, after the ad- journment of the city meeting, T re- quested the citizens to remain and discuss the matter of munieipa] light- ing. By a unanimous vote the pro- position was rejected. I feel that this expression alone would justify a veto and I herewith return the resolution to you disap- proved. Respectfully, GEORGE A. It is likely that a permanent organ- ization of secretaries of the commer- cial organizations of the state will be formed as the result of a conference to be held in the chamber of com- merce rooms in this city next Satur- day aftermoon. There are about forty commercial organizations in the state, inecluding chambers of commerce, businessmen’s assoclations, and boards of trade, Tha Connecticut chamber of commerce does not include all of these and there is need of an organization of secretar- ies whereby the work may be co- ordinated and co-operation secured in state-wide movements. As many of the forty organizations are small, it is not expected that the final mem- bership will exceed twenty-five, al- though all will be invited to attend the conference. A resolution expressing the sorrow of the chamber of commerce at the death of A, Howard Abbe, whose fun- eral was held yesterday afternoon, h been prepared by a committee con- sisting of Frank H. Johnson, Joseph R. Andrews and Frank J. Porter as follows: Whereas Almighty God, in his in- finite wisdom, has removed from our midst our worthy and esteemed fel- low member, A. Howard Abbe, Be It Resolved That the directors of the mercantile bureau of the New Britain chamber of commerce, repre- senting the entire membership, hereby express their sorrow at the loss of a faithful friend, an earnest and force- ful leader and co-worker, a good citi zen and an upright man, and that w extend to the bereaved family and rel- atives our heart-felt sympathy. Be Tt Resolved That a copy of the foregoing resolution, signed by the past-presidents of the Business Men's association of which Mr. Abbe was the first president, be spread upon the records, and that a copy be sent to the bereaved family and to the press, Ewents Tonight _] “The Girl in the Taxi™ win Lyceum. at the Russ- Moving pictures and vaudeville at EKeeney's, Moving pictures at Fox's.
