DAMAGES ABOUT §10.000 Harry Alex Owner of Block and Fur- niture Store, Recently a Bankrupt— Store Had Been Closed But Three Weeks Under Attachment—Cred- itors Met Yesterday. A sensational fire, in which several women and children were rescued from suffocation by the police and firemen, broke out shortly after 11:30 last night in the toilet on the second floor of Harry Alex's block on Main street. There is little doubt but that the damage will exceed $10,000, for the flames started in a place, such that in order to extinguish them, it was necessary to pour gallons of water into Alex’s furniture store. The res- cue of the weeping children and hys- terical women made the fire specta- ular to watch. There was an unus- ually small erowd in attendance. The flames rapidly gained headway fanned by a draught from an adja- cent air shaft, and swirled from one side to the other skipping up into the garrett, where the firemen succeeded in stopping them. Smoke poured from the upper windows of the building in great quantities. An inspection of the biulding this morning, showed that extensive dam- age had been done by water. In the tollet on the second floor the gas pipe had been melted, so that all that re- mained was a flat streak of lead on the floor. Much of the furniture in the furniture store was utterly ruined, al~ though Chief Dame said that he be- lieved that much of it could be sal- vaged.
