CHIEF DAME TELLS POLICE SUSPICION Fire on Washington Street Savors Strongly of Incendierism. Although during the past week or two there have been no less than three bad fires in this city, the origin of which has not been ascertained and Chief Rabert D. Dame of the department, no arrests have resulted because of the almost necessity of fastening the guilt upon a person. The suspicious fire which occurred in the old Gaffney house of Washington street last evening, start- ing simultaneously in three beds three different rooms, with no way of communication hetween them, was the last straw and this morning Chlef Dame reported the circumstances to the chief of police. Detective Ser- geant Samuel Bamforth was detafled to make an investigation and to- gether with Chief Dame he went thor- oughly over the premises and close- ly questioned the occupants of the tenement. They all maintained that they knew no incriminating evidence could be ob- tained. Cuts Hand in Escaping. The house where the fire occurred last night is oceupied upstairs by Mrs. Sullivan, wife of ex-Fire Chlef Sul. livan, who died several months ago. in Ilt was she who, upon noticing that her rooms were filled with smoke, gave the alarm. In her frantic ef- fort to escape she pushed her hand through a pane of glass and badly lac- erated one finger. Beds Mysteriously Afire. It was in the downstairs tenement that the fire was. When the de- partment arrived they found the place locked up and had to break in. Three unconnected bed rooms were filled with smoke and in each room the bed was afire. A decidedly peculiar feature was that despite the fact that all three beds were destroyed the in- terior of the rooms were not dam- aged in the least. The wood work was not burned and a few Dpaint blisters was the extent of the dam- age. Even the ceilings were not smoked up and the highly inflamable lace curtains hanging near by were not scorched. Bverything consid- ered, curious and afforded one of the best cases for suspected arson, of any that have occurred lately. From their investigation, Detective Bamforth and Chief Dame discovered that the family of Salvatore Lentinie, occupying the down stairs apartments, where the fire occurred, the time. They proved that left home at 7:30 o'clock and it was Birthday Partics, Socials, Church Fairs, Suppers and Avors are desired, our Hard Candics lead them all ”d price. for decorating) peanut filled piece jolasses fillecd piecce T flavors . nge center sugar coated iger center sugar coated 30c 1b. .30c 1b. Another significant fact in connec- tion with this blaze is that the insur- auce carried by the family was greater One boarder, in whose bed one of the fires was, for $500 and the other room where there was a blaze was insured for a like amount. Other Fire. It is peculiar that several ago there was another fire in this same tenement and that too, started in a bed. At the time the family said they could offer no explanation but this morning they had thought up one for the previous fire. They said that an old shoe was under the bed and it caught fire. How? How should they know? MARY ANTIN WILL i GIVE LECTURE HERE Author of “The Pmmhcd Land” En- i gaged By Commonwealth Club to Speak Feb. 189. Miss Mary Antin, the author of “The Promised Land” and one of the inspiring speak- ers on the immigration problem, will give an address at the Grammar school hall Tuesday, Feb. 19, undw the auspices of the Commonwealth club. The decision to engage Miss Antin was made yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the executive com- mittee of the club. It has been said that the most im- portant contribution made to our lit- erature on the Americanizing of foreigners is that of Mary Antin. She came to the United States with her parents from Russia twenty years ago when a child of thirteen and in six- teen years she had produced the book which made her reputation. One of the members of the Commonwealth club who heard her speak in Boston recently said to day that her appeal made her audience almost frantic and so disturbed him that he was unable to work for the rest of the day. Miss Antin's lecture will be open to the public and tickets of admission will eb placed on sale shortly. It is believed that the interest in Mary An- tin and her work will be sufficient to attract an exceptionally large audi- ence. The executive commiltee has engaged another speaker for 1, Dr. James L. Tryon, the New Eng- land director of the American Peace society, who will speak on ‘“Peace’ at a banquet to be held at the Y, lc. A | also The supper will be held at 6:30 for members of the club and at 8 o’clock the doors will be thrown open | to the public for the lecture.
