St. Louis, July - 9.—The naticnal ighampionship balloon - races Which Wwill start Saturday, July 11, here are ‘dttracting universal attention among /the balloonists, officials of the war department, weather bureau'and men &f science. The races are to be held By the Aero club of St. Louis, under the auspices of the Aero Club of America. The number of entries for the St. Louis ‘event, eleven, is largest ever made in a national race @nd includes the most daring ana #kiliful air pilots. All ballooning re- eords have been established by flights made from St. Louis, and it is ex- 3-Capt. the ! pected that new records will be ‘es- tablished, as no aerial event has ever been held under more favorable con. ditions.. Each of thé contestants is de- termined to defeat all previous re- cords. Alan R. Hawley holds the long distance record, 1,172.9 miles, made in a two days’ flight from St. Louis to Lake Tchotogama, Quebec, Oct. 17-19, 1910. C. B. Captain John Berry, St, Louis, dean of the bal- loonists, will, enter the balloon Aero Club of St. Louis, an 80,000 cubic feet. capacity rubberized balloon oWned by Albert Von Hoffmann. The bal- loon won in the national races from Kansas City in 1912 after sensational battling with a thunder storm for twelve hours. - Captain-Willlam Ass- man, St. Louls, claims the .distinction of being the second oldest pilot of the Aero Club of ‘America. He also claims the distinction of having had more narrow escapes and bad luck than any pilot in America. July 14, 1909, he fell from an altitude of 2,~ 000 feet into Lake Nipissing, Cana at night. Captain Paul J. Mccullou‘h St. Louis, has participated in every national championship balloon race except Kansas City, .July 4, 1913 He will enter the balloon . Uncle Sam, owned by Captain Honeywell. The balloon has figured in the national and international races since 191z, winning first, second and third places. Captain Warren Rasor, Brookville, O., will pilot the balloon Hoosier, an 80,000 cubic feet capacity bag, made by Captain G. L. Bumbaugh, Indian- apolis. Captain Arthur T. Atherbolt of Philadelphia has been interestea in the aviation sport for twelve years. He organized .and was the first presi- dent of the Aero Club of Pennsyl- vania. Captain Atherbglt has made ever 100 flights and has contested in all of the national and ipternational events. Captain E. §. Cole, St. Lous, has made twenty-one flights. Captain John Watts, Kansas City, who won In the recent Portland races, will enter the Kansas City. IL, the balloon en- tered in the Portland races. Dr. Je- rome Kingsbury.of New York city and Roy Donaldson of Springfield, Il are also entered.. Donaldson won the second ' place in the .Portland races, but lost his balloon, Springfield. Not Doctor But Had His Ticket. (Cleveland Plain Dealer.) At a local stock theater a certain young physician has a seat given him for each performance.
