IMMENSE FUND RAISED T0 DEFEND BECKER | Mystrions Collctors n Under world Recite Dangers of Exposre. New York, May 1.——When the sec- ond trial of Charles Becker begins next Wednesday morning the former head of the strong arm squad will be equipped with an immense defense fund collection from present and re- tired police officials and gamblers who contributed out of sympathy or for reasons known to themselves and Becker. out yesterday. George Considine, who ran the prosperous Hotel ' Metropole when Herman Rosenthal was shot to death {in its doorway nearly two' years ago, was approached by a collector Wwho i represented himself to be acting in Becker's interests and who more than hinted that it was time for Becker's former friends to reach into their . pockets. “I won’t put up a dollar,” said Considine. *“The Rosenthal murder ruined my business and closed my hotel. I ought to be the last. man on earth you would come to.” Exposure Arguments Used. If the informant has his facts | straight, the collectors who have been ‘acting for Becker by their own say 80-used the following argumtent with police officials, gamblers and some men who cannot be classified as law enforcers or law. breakers: “Becker doesn't give a damn about i the graft charges against him. He is fighting for his life. He is up against the electric chair for the second time. i If he ig called on to testify’ from the | Witness stand in his own defense the way will be opened to the district at- torney to cross-examine him as to how he got his monfey. “He won’t make the mistake of committing' perjury about matters of secondary interest. He is likely to give facts and the names that go with them. He has spent his own money. It is time for others who knew him in prosperity to make good and help him out.” ' ¢ Among the men who are mentioned as having responded to that appeal generously are ‘a hotel proprietor, a | restaurant keeper, several men who have been or who are police inspectors and gamblers who flourished when Becker was raiding in the Tenderloin. This information was given | One whose name has figured very largely in news from police head- quarters is referred to as a con- tributor of $10,000. A lesser light is put down for $2,000. An inspector who has served at headquarters gave, so the story goes, $1,000, but his blessing didn’t go with the cash. $50,000 Believed Collected. There has been absolutely no way for persons interested in exposing the sources of the fund to estimate its size. ~ Mere guesswork puts it in the neighborhood of $50,000, but the guess is based largely on the knowl- edge of how much money is neces- sary these days to finance a case of such complexity and importance as Becker’s. Martin S. Manton of Cockran & Manton, Becker's counsel, refused yesterday to talk for publication and nothing could be obtained from the Beckers. The story, however, per- sists in its entirety, and at the office of the district attorney it is not doubt- ‘ed in any of its details. District Attorney Whitman would not discuss it at all, but persons close to him know that in the last two days he has been worried by the attitude of new witnesses who indicate that they have been approached and that they can get almost any sum they ‘stand out for if they will refuse to testify. It is a fact that the district attor- ney has been obliged recently to elim- inate agents of his office whom he 100 AWeek Cheerful Credit YOUR CREDIT IS GOOD AND WE WANT YOUR ACCOUNT MEN'S BLUE SERGE Stunning suits for any man who wishes the best spring suit. by all. department. Men’s Balmacains used to shadow or to question pros- pective witnesses, for the reason that every agent was shadowed by persons assuming to act for Becker and who promptly interviewed the prospective witnesses as soon as they had been lo- cated through Whitman’s men. It is also a fact that several of the witnesses have been wavering in the last few days, and that they are not so sure now as they were a week ago that ' their testimony will be of value or that they ought to testify at all. $10,000 Offer to Rose. . ’ Whether or not the offers came from Becker ‘or those close to him, offers of large sums in cash have been made to Jack Rose and Bridgie Web- ber to get out of the country. Rose was offered $10,000 in cash, part down and the rest to be pald when he was safely away. Vallon and Schepps, the other half of the: informing quartet,” have re- fused terms offered. But Rose, Web- ber and Vallon -certainly: will testify for the district attorney, and Schepps may go on. the stand if he is wanted. That is doubtful at the present time because there are new witnesses to take the place of Schepps, whose tes- timony at the;former trial was looked upon with disfavor- by the court of appeals. District Attorney Whitman an- nounced yvesterday that he will be ready.on May 6, next Wednesday, to start the trial before Justice Sea- bury. Becker’s counsel said a few days ago that his side didn’t want a postponement, so the district attor- new assumes that there willj be no delay. Talesmen will be examined from a list of 300 names which have been drawn by direction of the court.. At the former trial 350 talesmen were called before the jury box was filled.
