Madrid, April 22.—The govern- ment’s interest in the Mexican situa- | tion is naturally predominantly con- cerned with the fate of Spaniards in that country. Premier Dato ex- pressed his gratification at the willing- ness of the United States to protect the subjects of Spain. More than 600 Spaniards have been repatriated on the initiative of Spain, but the safety of many of them depends upon Generals Carranza and Villa, and for this reason the intervention of the United States is of paramount import- ance. Senor Dato said the prospect of armed action by the United States and Mexico causes the greatest ' concern here, as the consequences are incal- culable. The government, he said, earnestly desires a peaceful solution of the trouble. Senor Lema, the minister of for- eign affairs, was equally affable. He emphasized the fact that it was im- possible to make any official declara: tion on the impending conflict, as Spain was a friend of both the United States and Mexico. Her general de- sire, he said, was for peace and her special desire was that the inter- ests of Spaniards in Mexico should he guaranteed.
