North. Physician and san- jtarian, Dr. North has been de- scribed as conducting a “private bu- reau of public health.” Yet, busy man that he is, he has been studying and analyzing for years the physical condition of the New Yorker. Some of the interesting discoveries he has made were indicated in a recent ad- dress before the American Associa- tion for Promoting Hygienic and Public Baths. “Although much has been done to decrease the mortality from infec- tious diseases,” he said, “the effect of modern city life wupon public health has been to increase the dan- ger of constitutional disease. This 18 due to the strain under which New Yorkers live. “The business man of today does more than three times as much as he did a few years ago. This is shown by the statistics of the railways, tel- ephone companies and mails. Be- sides, his food supply is not fresh and lacks nutrition and he does not et enough exercise.
