N. Sheats. e —— - e e o Mr. W. F. Hallam was the host at a dinner party at the Lakeland Highlands Country Club yesterday, his guests being Colonel and Mrs. 0. H. Wathen, of Louisville; Messrs. Hetherington, Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Holworthy, Mr. and Mrs. C. Rucker Adams and Miss Maude Wil . lis, whose readings have been so much enjoyed by Chautauquans of Lakeland. After a sumptuous meal and pleas ant intercourse with those now at t! Club House, among whom are . Elliot, of Chicago, head of a big book publishing concern and presi- dent of the Lakeland Highlands Coroperative Association; Mrs. Day, of Buffalo, N. Y., and Mr. and Mrs. Innis and the Misses Innis, of Cincinnati, and Mr. and Mrs. Agate, of.New York, the visitors from town were taken over the Lakeland Highlands in cars, and the develop- ment that has taken place even in the last few months was found to be little short of marvelous. There are now 1,000 acres planted in cit. rue fruits, a total of 5,000 aeres be - ing planned; and Mr. Hallam con- servatively estimates that when these grovés come into bearing they will produce one million boxes of fruit each season, or one.tenth of the total output of the entire State. The high hills, the deep ravines and gorzes, the lovely views, the giant oaks, and the wonderful devel - | opment opened the eyes of the Ken- tucky visitors with wonder and ad-| miration, while even those of the party who thought they knew Flor- ida pretty well, were forced to ad- mit, after walking through a por- tion of the property heretofore un-| seen, that they did not know that Florida had such deep ravines and such natural beauty spots as can be found at Lakeland Highlands. Just a week from today the Louis. ville Colonels, who are being put through their training paces at Lakeland will play their first exhi- bition game here. Their opponents will be Connie Mack’s world famous Athletics, winner of the American League championship last year and of the world's championship the year previous. President O. H. Wathen, of the Louisville Colonels, has arranged an unusually attractive series of exhi- bition games for the Lakeland fans. In addition to the champion Philadelphia American teams the other opponents are of distinctly championship caliber. The Chicago Cubs, who will be here later, are acknowledged to be contenders for the National League championship under the leadership of their new mapager, Roger Bres. nahan, this year. The Cubs ma- chine is one which has frequently tasted victory in the National League and in the world's series. The Birmingham team, which is also scheduled to play here, is a champion in its company. The Birmingham team is in the Southern League and for the past two seasons has won the champlonship of that circuit. The Barons, as they are called, arp owned by a millionaire who makes the team his hobby and depends on other interests for his living. Nevertheless the Barons have proved one of the best teams in the league. ‘The other teams to play here are the Cuban Stars and the Havana Reds, both among the best teams in the West Indies. The Reds under the leadership of Joe Massaguer, a well known sport writer of Havana, play the big league teams off their feet in the spring and captured the championship of the island before making their annual the United States. The Redsg begin this week with a series of games in Tampa and St. Petersburg. They have developed players like Marsans, who is a sub - ject of litigation in the baseball suit now in the federal court, Sieglie, who is with the Philadelphia Na tionals, Almeida, a major leaguer | severa] years ago; Palmero, now with the Giants; Acosta, an out- fielder for the Washington Ameri. cans and other stars. From this list of teams it can be seen at a glance that not another town in Florida not excepting Tampa, St. Petersburg, or .hchon-] ville, will have anything on Lake. land when it comes to class in the exhibition games. The teams sched uled are of the highest rank in their class and the fans of Lakeland will see this spring what devotées of the national game pay heavily to see in! the larger citieg of the country this summer. | That Lakeland is enthusiastic on ' the subject of baseball is evident from the praiseworthy move of its leading men in getting a baseball club to train within its confines this spring. But the task of promoting the interest in these spring games, | which deserve the support invasion of WHEN YOU PUT YOUR GOOD MONEY INTO § BUILDERS’ HARDWARE, YOU WANT THE RIGHT § STYLE, THE RIGHT QUALITY, THE RIGHT PRICE. ) THEN BUY YOUR BUILDERS’ FROM US. Everyone inter - ested in the welfare of Lakeland and i who appreciates what the coming of the best teams in the country to play here means, should be out rooting for the Colonels who constitute the home team. The Colonels are the representatives of Lakeland and need the cheering that the Lakeland fans can give them in their efforts to win here. Not a bad idea would be for the merchants who are promoting this enterprise to circulate a petition calling for closed stores on the af. ternoong of the big games, so that everyone whogfeels so inclined can get out to root for the Colonels. This would insure united support of the team, which it needs no less than do the progressive leaders of civic enterprise in Lakeland. ———————————————————————————————— The Ladies of the Maccabees will hold their regular review Tuesday evening, March 9,'at the Mooso hall u .
