M, Zaimis, governor of the 4¥iatonal bank of Greece, has not “lvet shown any indications of being sable to get together a new cabinet L to succeed that of Premier Venizelos, | g which vesigned on Saturday because ¢ Ring Constantine did not approve the jn!em‘ex policy for participation in " the war. King Constantine is under- *stood to desire the maintenance of neutrality, but Athens despatches siate that popular feeling is with M. Venizelos, who has declared that he énd_his party will not support any new government which may be fermed with a policy of neutralit The bombardment ot the Darda- nelles by the allies, which is primarily *responsible for the present situation *in Greece, has had its effect, also, on other nations, London despatches say | that the Bulgarian premier ha promised a statement concerning his government's paosition. Public ¢pinion in Italy also is aroused, al- thongh there are no indications that this nation will change its policy of | ,armed neutrafity at this time. Germans Lost 3,000 Men, A Paris newspaper in a description t0f the Tecent battle at Notre Dame D¢ Lorette, says that the Germans lost 3,000. Although they succeeded in “capturing the three lines of French | trenches, they are said to have been expelled from them in a furious night 7bhattle. The fighting in “which for prolonged and desperate encounters rivals any phase of the war, continues without a decisive vic- tory for either side. Cap- tain Tulloch said the Naneric had reached the eastern entrance of the canal about February 1, but had not been allowed to proceed because of the battle between the allies and the Turks near Ismalia. “The Turks,” said Captain Tulloch, “attempted to cross the canal, led hy German officers, but were repulsed by the allies, who directed upon them the fire not only of field pieces, but big guns of several warships. Both sides of the canal were heaped with dead bodies and many of the V tims rolled into the water. The loss of life was very great and the Turks appeared to be demoralized. “After several days’ delay the Nan- eric was permitted to proceed to Port Said. Her exposed portions were protected by bags of sand. On the way the British auxiliary cruiser Har- binger which was acting as a con- voy, received a shot through a smoke- stack.” SEPARATE POLICE AND FIRE DEPTS.—QUIGLEY Favors Different Commission for Each—Civil Service Coming ? Separate commissions for the police and firc departments which are now under the direction the board of public safety is a plan to which Mayor George A. Whether the subject will be dis cussed at a special meeting of the common council, which Mayor Quig ley called today, for Wednesday even- ing is not known. New York Report Says Salesman Haa Secret Affair With Lillian Cook. From New York comes a report to the effect that Miss Lillian Cook, the yvoung Brooklyn girl who committed sulcide under such peculiar circum- stances on West Rock in New Haven, had a secret romance and it is said that she had frequently been scen in | the company of “a young man em- ployed as a salesman for a New Britain, (Conn.) silver manufacturing concern.” This man's identity has not been revealed however, and the police declare they have no specific informa- tion regarding him or his relations with the victom of the tragedy. It may be that the concern referred to is Landers, Frary & Clark's, where tableware is made, which might be termed by some as silverware. of a HOSPITAL C RD PARTY, Annual Affair to Be Held on April 10 —Board Meets. Those who know the contents : of the communication said it was not in the nature of an ultimatum but point- ed out in explicit language that seri- ous conquences might follow if the welfare of foreigners continued to be disregarded. i Early in the day, Secreta Danie said no additions were contem- plated to the fleet in Mexican waters, Lut later it was learned that the cruiser Tacoma had been ordered from Port au Prince, Haiti, to Ve Cruz Secretary Daniels w in con- later with Secretary Bryan' concerning the ituation. Obregon Recognizes Carranza. Secretary Bryan, himself, would s only that there was no change in con- | ditions at Mexico City from the serious state of affairs of the last few days.
