Mr. Bates Polk, who has been in Centerville, Tenn., for the past three weeks on business, returned to Lakeland Saturday night. He re- ports zero weather in Tennessee and is indeed glad to be back in Lake- land. [Messrs. G. J. Gallemore, J. A. Johnson, L. W. Bates, F. M. La. nier and Sheriff Logan, of Bartow, were among a large number who came over from that city today to take in the Polk couuty Fair and witnesh the parade A party of active business men from Fort Wayne, Ind., consisting of B. Paul Mossman, Henry Miller, Fred G. Theime and their wives, sent word to Mr. George W. Pix. ley (who with his wife is spending the winter here) that they were making a flying trip to Tampa, Key West and return over the East Coast railroad and that they would like to stop over one train to see Lakeland and visit an orange grove and pick for themselves an orange; 80 Mr. and Mrs. Pixley met them at the train and through the kind- ness of Messrs. E. H. Youngs, Jr., and J. BE. Melton, who took them in their autoes about town and around beautiful Lake Hollings< worth, stopping on the way at the fine Kinney grove where they picked their first oranges and tan< gerines, then to the Citrus Exchange packing house. where they were shown the interesting process of washing, sizing and packing of the! orange and grapefruit for market, ' then to the platform of the express company where they were shown thé manner of packing that grand fruit, the strawberry, where through the kindness of Mr. Youngs each lady was presented a box of fine ber . ries. To say they were pleased only half explains the pleasure they expreesed In their admiration of the beauties of the town with its gently rolling hills and its beautiful lakes. The most comfortable look ing place they had ever seen and oh, won’t this be a grand place for us to come and spend our winters. We now see why the Pixleys are so much in love with Lakeland. Southeast Circle The Southeast Lakeland Circle will meet with Mrs. Fannin Wed - nesday afternoon, at 3 o’clock. «. AT THE BAPTIST CHURCH Vs Very large crowds attended the Baptist church yesterday. The Sun- day school was especially interest. ing. The class of Mrs. W. S. Ham. ilton gave an interesting account of the ark of the covenant. Another interesting feature was the reports. There are five depart- ments with superintendents and secretaries of each department. Each secretary makes a report of his department while the general sec- retary gives only./a summary. Yes- terday there were 402 present. At the 11 o’clock hour every available space in the bujlding was occupied. The subject of the ser- mon was “The Life Beautiful”— Psalms 50:2. 2 The pastor spoke of the beauties of mnature, showing . their . charm, but for a season they fade and de- cay. ‘He also spoke of physical beauty and its charms declaring that all of physical beauty must fade away and die. v He closed his discourse by speak- ing of spiritual beauty and of its growth from the infantile state to perfection jn death. REPORTER. TWO0 WHOLE FAMILIES JOIN THE METHODIST CHURCH The number of people joining the First Methodist church in the last few Sundays by whole families is quite unprecedented. Yesterday two families, fathers, mothers and chil- dren were captised and the Sunday before a whole family united with the church by profession of faith. Since the first of January, 72 new members have been added to the church. REPORTER. INTERESTING DAY WITH PRESBYTLRIANS The Sunday school of the First Presbyterian church had an attend- ance of one hundred and forty yes— terday. This was thrce above the rea] attendance up to date. Four classes had a record of per- fect attendance and three other classes had but one absent pupil. The morning coagregation whieh assembled to hear the sermon of Rev. W. S. Patterson on the sub- ject of The Bible jn the Home, filled the church auditorium. REPORTER. Nathania] Glover. GRADE IX A MargueriteCloud. Marguerite Straw. Grace Murrell. Redella Gain.
