A. Whitney is to resign from the bench is without founda- . tion. He has made a good judge and proven himself “the man for the place.” The rank and file of the people of the circuit would have him remain on the bench, and it is like- wise the desire of the lawyers with perhaps a few exceptions. Don't re- sign, Judge.” Ever old Joe Cannon, himself king of -tandpatters ana the fore- 'that Senator Fletcher was not in his ' mi most livinz daddy of the Republican party, .doesn’t charge the Democratic party with bringing on whatever in- dustrial and commercial depression may e ‘st in the country, much ag he would like to. He respects his in- telligence too much for that, and as he nears the grave he shows a dis- position to conform nearer to the truth in politics than was his wont in other ycars. Others of his party, 80 prompt to condemn the Democrats every time they hear of a man out! of employment, should pay heed to the following from this wise old Re_ publican with which he concluded a speech in Chicago the other night: “It is too soon to condemn the Democrats outright for their poli- cies. They have two more years be- fore their case will be tried by the people who then may reverse the en_ cian says that he will not be able to again visit the front, surprises no | one. What he has seen with his physical eyes and the appalling pic- orq is with ‘us once more and our gathers, and the size of his roll is tures always in his mental wvision, with every horizon lurid with flames, every plain strewn with corpses and no end to the stupendous horror in sight, are quite enough to lay low the pride and undermine the egotism of even the greatest of War Lords. e We take it from a perusal of the vigorous editorial page of the Miami Herald that that paper wants this country to declare war against Mex- ico for various and sundry reasons, including the accidental killing of two or three American citizens on the border who were potted by stray shots from Mexican factions pepper- ing each other on their own soil. Thanks be to Almighty God for a president incapable of such a stu- pendous and unforgivable crime; and if the editor of the Herald were in the president’s place, carrying his enormous weight of responsibility, he woulq be as far from armed inter- vention in Mexico for existing reas- ons as Mr. Wilson himself. We have said it before and we love to repeat it, that in all the foreign relations of this government since it was a government there is no finer episode than President Wilsons treatment of the complex conditions in Mexico that has saved both nations from the horrors of a needless war and main- tained the rights and honor of this ; government at every turn. | | i Repelling -0 a recent imputation ;seat when the rivers and harbors bill was before the Senate for debate the Orlando Reporter-Star has this ‘to say of our senior senator, which 'is simple justice to one of the most ' faithful and efficient .public men that ever served his people in either | house of Congress. “It is to be doubted if any State has a more able or conscientious representative in the Senate than { Florida has in Senator Fletcher. We have never heard the senior senator charged with being a brilliant man, 'but he has always been well in formed, instant, constant—eternally on the job. We dare say he has tak- en less time from his duties than any senator since his term began, {and it is due to this application and fidelity coupled with his well stored mind and native ability that he has achieved in one term a place among — The news story that Kaiser Wil-, the leaders in the Senate—s distine. Daytona Journal, and ';j";'::;::n helm is seriously {1l and his physi- tion never before accomplished by his usual good luck in . any senator from Florida."” i The dear old Cengressional Rec- jhappy little exchange family is again complete. i — Now would be a fine time for Mr. Carnegie to extend hts favorite form ! of charity anq erect a few Carnegie library buildings in Belgium. From all accounts those people over there are 8o hungry that they could even ; find nutriment in Carnegie libraries. | —— i Over in Orlando they are vigorous- ly debating through the local press the question of whether or not to feed the tramps and hoboes. Some | ‘want to put them on tne streets and ' jmake them earn their keem, while the mayor wants to open a soup room [ and serve them with free lunches. | There can be no hard and fast rule | laid down. There are tramps and | tramps and one tramp differeth from I‘another in merit or the want of it as ,one star differeth from another in glory. The professional is unmistak- able, for he has the index of his trade in every tone and glance and pose, and he should be made to work for his grub. The other kind—and there are not many of them—are shiftless and improvident, but not without self-respect and are willing to work. A little pointed question- ' ing may easily differentiate the two classes and the law should hold the one and let the other go. The pro- fessional bum should meet with no !charity and the community should | be cleansed of him as a honse of ver- ‘min, but abundant care should be jexercised to make no mistake and not punish the unfortunate out of a .joh and willing to take one. G Huzh Sparkman _is one of the . characters of Florida journalism. He ,tries it awhile in one place, makes 'it a success, or at least never makes a failure, and at some unexpected moment retires with a profit, puts his roll in his pocket, lights his cigar and saunters out into the State hunting for another nice little news- | paper investment. And he invaria_ bly findg it, planks down the pur- chase money in cash, makes a suc cess of the venture and sells again in due season to repeat his | experience. After leaving the Or- lando Sentinel recently we lost track of him, but we knew that he wag on the trail of another paper and would soon encircle it. He has.
