I" Societ WMMM A Pleasing Social Pre-Nuptial Affair One of the most delightful of the several prenuptial functions accord- ed Miss Erma Norvell was that given in her honor by Mrs. w. F. Johneon yesterday afternoon at her Pleasant home on South Florida ave- nue. The house is ideally adapted te entertaining, and the whole re- ception suite was beautifully dec- orated with ferns and cut flowers carrying out the color scheme of green and white. As the guests arrived they were met at the door by Master Edwin Thomas. Mrs. Johnson was assist- ed in entertaining Ly Mrs. J. B. Thomas and Mrs. Alexander. The whole gathering was a brilliant ar- ray of prettily gowned girls. In the cente; of the parlor, placed on chairs, was a comfort in frame ready to be tacked. All were soon busy with thread and needle, the time passing so swiftly in animated chat and merriment that the comfort ‘was soon finished, a pretty dainty pink affair which Mrs. Johnson pre- sented to the fair honoree. What ‘more pleasant reminder in after +years of this charming bevy of girl ! friends than this piece of handwork! A feature creating much merriment and laughter was when a cat was :brought in and placed on the com- fort, the girls forming a circle taround the comfort, taking hold and gshaklng vigorously to see at which the cat would jump, as, according to !an old tradition, this would indicate who among them would be the next bride. Thig proved to be Miss Dor- rothy Bates, so wedding bells will continue to ring. Miss Frances Youngs and Miss Ruby Turner con- tributed much to the pleasure of the rafternoon by their gkillful rendition of several musical selections. The ' punch bowl, placed on a table in the ‘reception hall, and nestling in a bed 'of flowers, was presided over by two ‘charming little girls—Mary Watson .and Mary Louise Johnson—who ‘served the delicious beverage during the afternoon. Mrs. Johnson, as- igisted by Mrs. Thomas and Mrs. iAlexander, then served a dainty salad - course with sandwiches, pickles, olives and cocoa. At the edge of each plate on one side was placed a dainty bunch of pink geraniums, a bunch of white ones distingnishing the plate of the bride to be. This brought to a conclusion one of the prettiest and most de- lightful social favors tendered Miss Norvell whose approaching wedding is an event of much interest to a wide circle of friends. The guests then departed with many assurances to their hostess of a most pleasant afternoon. Those enjoying the oc- casion were Misses Erma Norvell, Dorothy Bates, Laura Southard, Ed- ith Tomlinson, Ada Padrick, Gene- vieve Morrow, Nannie Let Turner, Gladys Wilson, Belle Cloud, Annie Cargill Mayes, Ruby Turner, Fran- ces Youngs, Mrs. J. B. Thomas, Mrs. Alexander, Master Edwin Thomas and Miss Mary Watson. Mrs. Padrick Entertains Maccabees Mrs. Padrick entertained the La- dies of the Maccabees at her cozy $ g home on East Main street, Friday afternoon. Owing to the inclement weather there were but eight mem- .bers and seven visitors present, and after a most enjoyable hour delicious hot chocolate and home made cake wag served. At a late hour the guestg depart- ed, all voting Mrs. Padrick a most gracious hostess. Flanagan, ' Noted Speakers - Create Interest In Vegetable Bureau A few interested growers attend- ed the meeting yesterday to hear Dr. Weaver and Mr. Rooney, of Oqala, who are going over the State in the effort to organize the farmers and truck growers under a co-opera- tive plan as the Florida Vegetable and Marketing bureau. The first speaker, Dr. Weaver, who was in- troduced by Secretary Holworthy, is @ chemist and soil expert as well as a farmer and truck grower and has therefore had personal experience with the problems which confront the man who ig and has been raising crops in the South largely for the support of the commission men at the North. Dr. Weaver has grown tired of this and in cenference with Mr. Rooney, the genial and capable secretary of Marion county's Board of Trade, they have been able to work out a plan which has not only received a more or less hearty co- operation on the part of the grower, but has received the endorsement of the United States agricultural de- partment, which has compiled the by-lawg to be adopted at the organ- ization meeting at Ocala next week. The plan of the bureau is very sim- ilar to that of the Citrus Exchange and is to be worked out on similar lines. Following Dr. Weaver's talk Secretary Rooney, who is president of the temporary organization, and, as he ig doubtless the most capable man for the job, will be elected next | week for permanent president of the association, outlined the plan thor- oughly and obtained the interest and cooperation of those present, most of whom were only too glad to join the organization. Those not present yesterday can get information with regard to the organization and its plans from Secretary Holworthy, of the local Board of Trade or from T. S. Clifford, president of the Farm- ers'’ Club, Rev. W. H. Pugh has returned from a trip of two weeks to Colum- bia, S. (., and will occupy the pul- pit of the Lutheran church tomor- row. CONTRACTOR IS SUED Contractor James D. Goin is a de- fendant in circuit court to a suit for divorce brought by his wife, Ethel ¥. Goin, and filed yesterday. Mr. Gojn, who at one time was a mem- hér of the firm of Parrish & Goln, but who later bought out the inter- estg of Mr. Parrish, several weeks ago figured in a mysterious disap- pearance from the city, accompanied by Mrs. Goin. he returned, stating that he had merely been absgent a fishing trip. -~Tampa Tribune. ¥, twill meet the first and third Mon- day nights of each month in Moose hall.
