AR The English suffragettes are coming out grandly in the present crisis in their country and, forget- ting their own alleged wrongs for the time, they are devoting them- selves to the common cause with ot less zeal than they fought and scratched and starved for suffrage. A virile womanhood is a tremendous | factor in the strength of a nation at war. Qe H Irvin Cobb, the big, fat, funny | man of the Saturday Evening Post, now in Europe to give his morall support to the side extending nim hospitality for the time being, sent off a dispatch to the American pub- lic the other day solemnly affirming that to the best of his knowledge | and belief the dear Germans, under whose auspices he was abiding for a spell, had been guilty of no cruel- ties in Belgium. A few hours later Irvin was nabbed by the German soldiers as a suspicious character, possibly a spy, and at last accounts was still in hock. How bitter is the irony of fate! I N 0. The coast of Florida seems to be a favorite battle ground for cruisers of the nations at war in Europe. They were fighting all up and down the East Coast the other day and now the report comes that they have tackled each other in St. Andrews bay away out in West Florida. The thunder of the guns is s Y. Our nerves are raw 10w Wwith daily sensations from Eurcpe, and we want our senatorial election to be a nice, quiet, lady-like affair, de- void of all unpleasant features or exciting incidents. . 3 0. Emperor William is at last show- ing some acknowledgement of the force of public opinion in America and is seeking to excuse the cruel- ties of his soldiers in Belgium by the amazing statement that it was necessary to use severe measures with the Belgian “population’ for ‘firing on his troops. This is an ef- ‘fort to differentiate the Belgian bopulation from the Belgian sol- diers and deny to the former their God-given right to defend their homes against the invasion of a hostile army. Such a distinction is something new in war and will not be accepted as,valid. Since there was a human race it has been hela as the inalienable right of every man, woman and child to join in the work of repelling ‘the lawless in- vaders of their homes, and the Bel- ‘gians haye won the admiration of sea fights as no one has seen the ' ships in action and no disabled ves- sels have limped into port. Tt may be that these combats are creatures of the imagination, but whether they are or not, they make a very poor quality of war news in the ab- sence of all particulars. 0 THE RAILROAD PEOPLE OUGHT 10 KNOW The railroads are the surest busi- ness barometers in the country, for they are in constant and intimate touch with industrial and commer- cial conditions, as well as with the entire traveling public. So sensi- tive is this stupendous American transportation system of ours to changing conditions that, like the barometer to which compared, it indicates fair or foul weather in the business worid in ad- vance of the fact itself, and when railroad people, with their hands on the pulse of the country, are hope- ful or despondent, we may l'now for a certainty what the signs of the times are. In this connection we reproduce from the St. Petersburg Independent the following which has more of substance in it than mere speculations. And we may add that in Lakeland, as in St. Peters- burg, mnew faces are seen on the streets every day and the indica- 1 tions are for an early tourist sea- ‘,' 'son: 8 “The railroad men have found - out, one would judge from the ' statement made to the Tampa Tri- bune by J. G. Kirkland, district passenger agent for the A. C. L. railroad in Tampa. Mr. Kirkland had just returned from Wilming- ton N. C., where he attended meeting of the passenger men that railroad. He said they all agreed that the prospects for heavy travel to Florida voints dur- ing the coming season are better than ever before and the railroad is making its plans to handle more passengers than last winter. “The railroad representatives ought to know, especially as they declare that many reservations have already been made, even this far ahead of time. The men in the pas- senger department that travel to the South is unusually heavy now for this season of the year and that it is not composed entirely of resi- dents of Florida who have been away for the summer. Newcomers are on every train. Some of them a say nent residents and others are com- ing on pleasure or in search of health. In St. Petersburg one can see many strangers any day on Central avenue." it has been | of | are coming to this State as perma- the world for the courage and devo- tion with which they opposed the ruthless soldiery burning their cities and villagess and shooting down their pecople. IThey have played second fiddle to their Paris rivals so long that it seemed as if their chance would never arrive. But the war has changed more things than the map of Europe, and styles are among the (factors that have felt the “shifting " influegree.” It is pretty well assured that the ifashions will be so delayed in ar- 'riving from Paris within the next few months—if, indeed they get out of the city at all—that it will ‘not be wise to await their coming. Therefore the leading dressmakers of the United States are going ahead and creating their own designs. Further, they are going to push them, just as Paquin, Poiret and 'other famous French dressmakers push their individual modes. | REACHING THE A8POT It Has Been Done, So Scores of Lakeland Citizens Say To get rid of an aching back, The sharp twinges, The tired-out feelings, i You must reach the spot—get at the cause.
