When we consider the railroads, the telegraph, the public press and free schols in- numerable supposed to be training people to get accurate information at least about their own country, it is amazing to contemplate the prodig- fous mass of ignorance in these United States about plain facts that should be matters of common knowl- edge among all classes of people. bt Colonel Herbert 1. Anderson's threat to move on the courts, lariat all the nominees under the Bryan primary law with an injunction and have the law itself declared uncon- stitutional, has aroused some lan- guid hot weather comment in a few newspapers but has otherwise failed of its purpose—which was to create a sensation. Colonel Anderson is genial, versatile and entertaining, and as the only and consequently the leading Bull Mooser in Florida. he is expected to contribute to the gaiety of State politics; but in this instance he has fallen down on the job, his joke a failure and his stage thunder too obvious to thrill even the yokels in the gallery. his humor is spiceless, Dicemicins Enemias of Florida and other peo- ple and papers that speak without knowledge are telling it that the drouth has killed the orange and grapefruit crop down here this sea- son. Meanwhile we should re- gard every Mexican politician the servant of some aggregation of or- ganized capital, every military chief- tain as a cut-throat and bandit. The work to be done may be rough, but it should be thorough, and if Mr. Wilson does not do it the country will get a president who will."” ——0 VALUE OF OUR EXPORTS By figures obtained from the of- fice of Judge J. F. C. Griggs, col- lector of customs, the value of mer- chandise exported from all Florida ports during the year ending 30, last, was, 172,079. June approximately $42,- The value of merchandise i imported during the same period was | $9,950,642. By comparing the exports with the imports, it will be seen that Florida produced for export purposes more than four times what the State utilizes in imported products. The value of all exports for the past year exceeded the value of the exports for the preceding year by nearly one million dollars. The im- ports were in excess of the previous vear's record by $1,301,405. : The collections from all sources at all ports amounted to $2,376,466.39, or almost twice as much as the total collections made by the collector of internal revenue.—The Florida Me- tropolis.
