A fine man, genial, ca- pable, helpful and tireless, he has fallen asleep all too soon and his place will be hard to fill. o Broadening the editorial columns of the Tampa Tribune has not neces- sarily broadened its views but it has surely added to the attractiveness of that page ang given it a certain se- & ductiveness—Ilike the cheery face of the man without a grouch you are always glad to meet and listen to. Sl Judges Hocker and Shackleford of: the Supreme court of Florida, both candidates for re-election this year, will not have the walkover that seemed probable until recently. There is another entry in the race. John C. Avery, of Pensacola, a law- yer of high repute, has announced himself a candidate and he will doubtless get busy right away to promote his candidacy. If he expects to do business down in South Flor- ida he will have to come to see us, for we don't know him and we want a speaking acquaintance. \ o Jacksonville is slowly but surely, getting there in the matter of the! $60,000 fund to take care of the| 'Confederate reunion in May. Up to yesterday $23,150 had been secured, and the police, the newsboys, the ball clubs, the movies and other agencies are hard at it to secure the remainder. Jacksonville makes rather a poor showing in this mat- ter by comparison with other south- ern cities where these reunions have‘ been held, but we don’t doubt that. she will entertain the old soldiers' in good shape when the time comes. 7 i S Joe Hugh Reese of the Orlando| *Sentinel has announced himself as a candidate for the Legislature from Orange county and we can’'t think ‘of a reason in the world why he shouldn’t be elected. Joseph has, been attending the Florida Legisla- ture for years past reporting the; proceedings for the press and he knows all about the law-making, machinery anq how to operate it. He has native and educated ability| that has put him into the front rank| of newspaper men in Florida and he is one of the not numerous company of citizens who know what the State needs in the way of new laws and ;mary.
