The beauty of the coat materials de- signed for grownups this season has had its effect upon the coats for emall folk. Naturally the gorgeous embossed velvets and brocades are outside the province of children’s clothes, but many of the plain and corded velvets and silks are used for coats for little folks and there are innumerable things among the soft woollen stuffs that are admirably adapted to the same pur- pose. Peau de peche, baby lamb cloth, woo! velours, duvtyne, zibiline, ratine, chin- chilla, wool corduroy—all in appropri- ate colors—make charming little coats and along these light weight, thick and soft woolens are old favorites, euch as broad- cloth, which never loses its popular ity for children's wear, Blue, from light to pastel, sapphire and navy is al- ways a good color for the child’s coat. Forvery small girls there are bewitching lit- tle models in light blue broadcloth, Pale Blue Broad- {1i;med with nar- cloth, row bands of fur —ermine, seal, beaver or skunk. The little coat shown hete was of light blue broadcloth trimmed all around the edge with a narrow line of baby lamb. There was a turn down collar of the baby lamb, brightened at the edge with a touch of rose velvet. The belt at the back and sides was of the fur and ornamented in front with large buttons of red velvet. Directly in front there was an inset belt of the material. There are sapphire blue coats, too, in corded velvet, with tiny collars of fur, and there are exquisite old blues in the plain velvets which are lovely with touches of dark fur, Velvet in all the dark and medium tones of blue, in black, in browns from sand to beige, in warm dark greens and in many beautiful shades of red, s used for smart little coats and al- most {nvariably is fur-trimmed. TOQUE THAT IS WATERPROOF Serviceable But None the Less Pretty Head Covering—Many Shapes Are to Be Offered. Hats and toques are in every possi- ble shape, so there is a choice for all. One of the newest is the patent leather waterproof variety, much worn by women at the races, and very suitable for sports. The brim is forced well down upon the halr, and is lined with colored silk, a band of the same surrounding the high crown. The silk Is stitched in close lines and is sometimes blue, at oth- ers red or the unew shade called tango. A very useful hat for country wear is in tan colored leather, the crown and brim in sections closely stitched together, the wired brim lined with silk, usually black, some- times green or blue. The new woolen velvet hat, in black or colors, has an adaptable brim, curved to any shupe, and usually trimmed with a silk or satin band around the crown. The colors in which this hat is made are purple, saxe, tan and navy blue. For ceremonious occasions there i8 among many others the round black hat in the same material as men's silk hats, very simply trimmed with striped or fancy ribbon rolled round | the crown, and rising in an aigret at one side. Brown velvet composes many smart hats, with trimming of handsomely patterned ribbon that seems borrowed from savage races, especially when it sits on the edge of the brim in meaningless fashion. Jeweled Buttons. The huttons are importan. items ia the making of a waistcoat, for they may transform the most commonplace garment into a lovely creation. Wom- en who spare no expense in getting ef- fects in their clothes are displaying the jeweled buttons—in rare cases in- set with genuine stones, though gen- erally of the semi-precious variety— others are eagerly seeking the old paste buttons, worn by the gentry of he past, and the hand-painted buttons amietimes the work of artiste who left asting reputations to posterity.
