To give even a more careless outline to the figure, there are new coats that hang from the shoulders to hips with | slight fulness. They follow the line of | Liie shoulder, but of no other part 0\" the figure, and the long loose sleeves usually run to a point at the neck line. They are not the elephant's: ear sleeve which some of the coats carry as well as many of the bodices, but they are loose enough to follow the general suggestion of the coat. _ One of the newest varieties of this Jacket has a thick cable cord run through the fullness about an inch be- low the waits line. The cord does not attempt to draw in the fullness or out- line any curve of the figure; it is merely an ornament, and as such it should receive its due value. A dark blue suit, for instance, has a deep red cord tied in front with two tasseled ends; a black suit has a dark blue cord It takes a slim figure to wear this new jacket, but why make that bromidic statement? It begins and ends every fashion discussion, FLOWERS SET OFF COSTUME New Designs Are Novel and Beautiful and Return to Old Style Will Be Welcomed. After refraining of late from wear ing the buttonhole, the beauty and novelty of the new designs are tempt- ing the devotee of pretty etceteras to reconsider her decision. A bunch of acorns and oak foliage made cleverly of leather and velvet is a pretty little novelty, and a knot of tiny dahlias arranged in an elon- gated form suggests the stately height of that favorite autumn plant. Upon an evening dress the large sin- ple flower still maintains its ascend- ancy, and orchids vie with roses for the first place in feminine favor. Very bright pinic and impossible blue everlasting flowers are a notice- able feature in some of the florists’ windows, but they are not to be worn. Their province is to add brightness to the house, Then are sent out in rustic baskets bunched with ribbons of the same pat- tern as the receptacles that hold lil- ies of the valley or any other growing blossoms. ROSES OF SILK, CREPE, OR MUSLIN HIGH IN FAVOR F two dollars and a half does not mean much to you, that is, not so much as a wonderful long-stemmed rose, you may supply yourself with the most approved of decorations for muft or coat. It will keep fresh for some time in the cool, moist air. But it can- not stand the dry heat of steam and will be a wreck after a matinee or musicale or any other gathering in steam-heated rooms. Therefore, even very rich women affect the long-stem- med rose of silk, or crepe or muslin, 50 cunningly made that it deceives the oye. Silk roses are liked best, and a sin- gle half blown blossom makes a glori- ous ornament. They are scented with attar of roses, a lasting odor. No de- ception in this; it is the real perfume of the rose, as fascinating to the sense of smell as the rose is to the sight. Deep red, and pink roses are liked for wear on the street, as much like nature as artifice can make them, and this is saying a great deal. Certain manufacturers give their whole attention to the rose. They make up all varieties and copy the natural model with amazing fidelity. | Even in florists’ shops one sees arti- | ficial roses, and they are for sale, s¢ that one may choose between nature | and art. But manufacturers depart from na- | ture’s production and give us gauze roses of gold and silver, ghostly crepe roses, gorgeous velvet blossoms in strange colorings for evening gowns, "and odd, richly colored feather roses; but these last are rare. The single long-stemmed rose is the | fad in blossoms just now. But it can- | not entirely replace the bouguet of violets, the cluster of orchids or the gingle gardenia. These all have their | devotees. Violets in which a single | orchid, or a small rose, is set as the center of a round bouquet, are great favorites. All the flowers are oftener ! geen in artificial thap in natural blos- ! soms, and all are scented. JULIA BOTTOMLEY. e b e ELAN; Sh: h uld goes ] f th F wi ko .
