When I became a candidate in1908, |1 went straight to the people, repre- serting and backed by no particular clique, ring, faction or class. I asked nobody’s permission to run and I bore the tax and burden of the race myself. Precisely the same will be the course I will pursue in this contest. I represent all the people without distinction as to whether they be “plain” or ‘‘common” or oth- erwise and 1 will submit to them— the whole people—whether they de- sire me to continue to represent them or not. I propose to show them that I have been faithful to the trust they reposed in me and that I have ren- dered efficient service and am in position to serve them to greater ef- fect in future than was possible in the past or would be possible for any new man. T will have to return to Washington from time to time, as public business requires, but I will visit every portion of the tSate and meet as many of the people and as frequently as possible.
