The way we neglect or inland waterway facilities and fail to use them for transnortation purposes at an immense annual saving in money is somethine amazing. To improve those waterways and make them navizable for small boats would be’ to larcely release the Florida farmer from dependence upon the railroads for the transportation of his pro- duce, and as Secretary Folsom, of the Palatka Board of Trade says, it would give a man with a row boat, a motor hoat or a steamboat a free right of way to tow his own coods to market. Any country in Europe with in- land waterways equal to ours would | be quick to imvrove them and put them into transportation service, and it would pay us handsomely thromch all the years to come if we would do the same thinz. We are gleenping on great opportunitics to neglect our lakes, creeks and rivers. enterpr is PSS S We notice that quite a number of the counties of Florida now have a man employed regularly iy the ca- pacity of acricultural adviser, whose duty it is as a practical expert in farming to put hig learning ard ex- pericnce at the service of any farm- er in the count; free of charge. This f8 an approach to the method long | in successful operation in Germany and ought to be a substantial benefit to those tar know too muca to learn anything from anyboly else. ¢ SN, That cartoon In the Jacksonville Metroyolis, which conveys the idea ' that all Florida is broken-hearted because of the death of J. R. Par- | rott is coming it a little strong. The East Coast may well mourn the ' death of a strong railroad executive | who dd much under the direction of Mr. Flasler for that part of the ! State, but it was hardly good art or | good sentiment to represent the de-‘ ceacsed railroader as the suverlative benefactor of the whole State. | —0 Jeff 1.. Jeff hardly stas in one place long enough to receive the best wishes of his aner friends unlezs the postmaster wards his exchances to h test ad- dress, but il this catches him lefore he gets away from Marianna we bid him good luck and urge him to stick. news: SCPRETE S— Tho'l.'m- J. R. Parrott, presiient of the Florida EFast Coast Railway Co., had the supreme practical qual- ity of executive ability in hizh de- gree, and the man who has that can command his own price for his gervices. Such men are all too scarce in an ave in which they are more needel than ever before, and a capable successor for Mr. Parrott will be rard to find. Averiil ! iman, just twenty-one years old, has set the speculators of Wall street yuessing as to how he will cast his deciding vote in the cut- ting up and distribution of the juiciest melon that Wall street has heard of in years. The Union Pacific railroad, which was the pet road of E. H. Har- riman, the boy's father, has accumulated the tremendous surplus of $59,000, 000. To this has been added the $81,000,000 which came into the coffers of the railroad with the sale, by court orders, of the Southern Pacific rallroad. Now, young Harriman, Yale 1913, holds the deciding vote in the distribntion of this vast sum of money.
