Merchant Tailors you'lll get what you pay for and that m:ans true satisfaction Miami Herald discusses the senator-| Prick roade has put another big | fal situation in this State with spe- cial reference to the election of a. The | successor to Senator Fletcher. Herald comes out strongly for that gentleman as his own successor, and | what it says is sald so well that we | reproduce a part of the editorial. The Telegram {8 committed to the candidacy of no one in the senatorial race next year, for there is abund-| ant time to line up on that {ssue and gentlemen whose names have not yet been mentioned may an- nounce themselves for the position later on; but the Herald states with such clearness and force certain qualifications for the office, which it ! accredits to:Senator Fletcher, that it is good reading for those who! want to do some right thinking on the question. Says the paper: “Through its present senator, Flor- ida has gained an enviable position in the affairs of this country. Mr. Fletcher has shown extraordinary ability and it is not the slightest ex. aggeration to say that he is one of the really great men of the Senate. From the very first he took high po- sition in the chief councils of the Senate and has been one of its most conspicuous leaders. Through the influence he gained by his standing ig the Senate Florida has received the greatest possible benefit, Mr. Fletcher's reputation is nation wide and Florida has reaped the advan- tage of his repulation, hig batriot- fsm and his ability. Possessing ev- ery quality that can possibly be claimed by any one or ‘all of the gentlemen who may oppose him, he hag still this onc advantage that he has had the actual experience in the Senate which enables him to be im. mensely useful to his State and his country. “The South once controlled this eountry because it sent its ablest men to Congress and kept them there for long years, well knowing that it was by actual experience that these men gained influence and power. That influence and that power made the South the most im- portant part of the union for the greater part of the history of the country. Florida should not com- mit the blunder of setting aside a good man, one who has proven his efficiency, one who had made a name for himself and his State through- out the country, for any man, no matter what his character or what his ability. The State should not, and will not throw away the ad. vantage it has gained in having Mr. Fletcher in the Senate.” b e Colonel Roosevelt is probably not guilty, but if he did say over in Arizona the other day, as charged, that in case of a war with Mexico he would take no part in it, as it would only be an affair of second lieutenants, he said a very silly thing destitute of both truth and common sense. Those Mexicans are good fighters; they don’t fear to die on the battlefield; they are masters of guerrila warfare, and with the immense topographical difficulties of a vast country, largely mountain. ous and desert, Uncle Sam would have a difficult and costly job on his hands if he should undertake the conquest of Mexico. It would be a very different affalr from the war of 1846, and not only aill the leuten. ants, but captains, majors, colon- els and generals, with several hun- dred thousand privates, would be required to subdue those flerce fif-| teen million people fighting on thelr own soll. Roosevelt made no such asinine statement as he is charged with; some smart aleck careless of the truth put the words in his mouth, D L — As the completion of the Panama eanal s right at hand and the wa- ters have been let in on the Pacific side we read much in hizhflown speech wbout the joining of the wa- ters of the world's two great oceans by the splendid achlevements of man. But it len't true. The Chi- ['of his office. county on its mettle. The commis. sioners of Escambia county, of which Pensacola {8 the capital, are now se- riously discussing calling an elec- tion to vote on an issue of $1,500,- 000 in bonds to build a system of brick-roads all over the county and the Pensacola Journal warmly ap. proves the proposition. A few years hence the Florida county without modern good roads will be regarded as a freak county. ——— e There was no cleaner, purer man in the public life of this country than Mayor Gaynor of New York, whose sudden death while on an ocean voyage was announced yester- day. That Tammany had refused to endorse him for renomination as mayor was in itself conclusive proof of his incorruptible administration country generally can ill afford o fose such a man in these days of widespread graft. The Mulberry Herald cried aloud | that now is the psychological mo- ment for Polk county. Motion to amend: Now and any time in the | future, for Polk county’s charms are | infinite and her resources inexhause' tible and only a cataclysm can put an end to her psychological mo- ments.
