Cable, for a certain book he wrote some years ago reeking with sins similar in kind and degree to those of Am- bassador Page. The mistake as ours. The editir of the Times was chasing the right quarry, and, having run it to earth, proteeded to rend it and lacerate it and’ distribute its dripping and quivering remains over the editorial page of that paper n a way to make us shudder at the ferocious fullness of his pitiless revenge. Butchered to make an editor’s holiday? Let it go at that, Some time when we have abund. ant space and the ozone of autumn 18 in the air, we hope to gently lead our, friend of the Times up out of the murky, miasmatic atmosphere of his present mood toward the two afore- | said victims of his wrath, and now that they are “‘dead, damned and de- livered” in accordance with his edict, teach him to think more kind- 1y of them, and possibly in this year which has witnessed the fra- ternal handclasps at Gettysburg, in- duce him to lay a wreath of forgive. ness upon thelr new-made graves. f m—— Representative Brown of this eounty, tried hard, but in vain, at the last session of the Legislature to get his bill passed providing for the exercise of suffrage through the mails by drummrs, railroad men and others who could not be at home on elecion day. It may comfort him to know that Secretary Daniels of the navy department agrees with him as to the fitness of such a law and is publicly advocating it, even going further and insisting that the enlisted nien of the army and navy shall have the right to vote through the mails. fIn his speech in Long Beach, Cal., the other gight, he said: “We have too large a class of citi- gens generaliy well educated and well-to.do, who abdicate the kingly right of suffrage. A way should be found to make i- easier for them to vote, then require it of them. There i{s hardly an election any- where in the country outside of presidential years where the {ssue fs not carried by a minority of the electorate. There should be a law by wiih all offices and enlisted men fn the hrmy cnd navy, all other public officers who are employed away from their place of residence, all college students who are of age, and all drummers and railroad men can vote by mall.” ' e e (e The Miami Metropolis joins the fong procession of friends noting the pew, home Into which the Telegram will soon go and says: “Congratulations are due - the Lakeland Evening Telegram which sow plans to build a magnificent fome of its owrs according to ar- chitectural plans published in one of the latter isenes of that paper—and according to t'e plans, the Telegrath puilding wil! he a credit to a eity considerably lovier than Lakeland, The new building is to have a front- age of twenty-five feet and a depth of one hundred and twenty feet, three stories high, M. F. Hether. ington, owner of the Lakeland Tele- gram ‘and Lakeland News, was for- merly associated with the Metrop. olis, going to Lakeland some eight yeari, venting the Canadians themselves from seeking new homes in a coun- try Whieh has so many advantages | over their own snowclad wastes where it 15 “nine months winter and three months late in the fall.” Splendid people, those Canadians, and we want to get them headed this way in large numbers. The en. terprise of the Florlia Grower is likelv to achieve this end. —_—— Some are criticising Congressman Sparkman because in appointments he remembers his friends. And yet the man who doesn’t stand by his triends--all other things being equal -is about the meanest of all.—St. Petersburg Times, The congressman -whas n't stand by his friends in’ his ‘recom- mendations for offits mayihase: the approval of his own conscience but he won’t hold on to his job very long, - We have not yet reached that {deal state of public service when triendship can be'ignored in ap- pointments to office and probably never will. Fitness ought to have the first call, of course, but friend. ship will generally find a way to dis- cover the fitness of a friend, and it's not & bad way, either. ——( The Ocala Banner has assembled a large number of instances to show that the world is better and decenter now despite the slit skirt and a few other things than in the good old days we read about. To its list the Banner might add the fact that last Sunday a Chicago minister stated from his pulpit in proof that the world is getting better that if David or Solomoa were alive today and conducted themselves as they did while on earth they would not be ad- mitted into membership with any lChrmln church in existence. e (e We regret to learn of the death of Judge Charles H. Laney at his home In Pensacola last Monday. Judge Laney was an {interesting character, a quaint and attractive survival of the old South, o simple, kindly gentleman, remarkably well informed, & good stump speaker and an excellent writer. The Judge was a clean and honorable man and he will be missed in Pensacola. ——— The St. Petersburg Times has coined a néw ‘word, and ‘as & short cut to the thought sought to be ex- pressed It is mot bad. It speaks of the “previosity” of a candidate in prematurely announcing himself for office. It is an old disease un. der a new name, but old Dr. Vox Pop knows just what to do for it in every instance. Dade City bae a new paper, the Banner, published by the Banner Publishing Co., with John Tippen as oditor. The Banner is distinctly anti-booze and look well and reads well. 1Tts salutary is sensible, practical and to the point. The new paper has our best wishes. - STILL THEY GROW Among the latest*news of impor- tance to the newspaper fraternity is that Editor Hetherington of the Lakeland Evening Telegram and the Weekly News, is soon to have a new and modern office building, which will be a thing of beauty and a joy for—a long time to come. This is but another link in the great chain of progressiveness that is every- where apparent in Florida, and es. pecially South- Florida, which for- tunately is nof:mbre s t any where than with the large dugieh of excellent newspaperss. When seen yesterday at the San Carlos by &/ Herald reporter, Mr. Michod had just returned from the Redlands, ! were he had purchased twenty acres (ot land. “This i8 a marvelous country, said the westerner. “I had no idea of. buying any land when 1 started to, Florida, I was coming South and came on down here to see some Ev- erglade land that my son had bought. * * * Speaking of the freeze in Califor- nis last winter, Mr. Michod said it s much more serious than is gen- ¢rally supposed.: “It was not only a frost, but a freeze something 1i the famous freeze you had in the northern part of Florida in 1896.' Thousands of trees have not yet shown any signs of life above the, roots, and the old trees are only Teafing out along the trunks. Th limbs of all trees are absolutely dead. Roads entering Los Angeles fun for miles and miles through these dead orchards, so that we are actually ashamed to. have visitors come to thp Staty and notp the marks of desolation on every side in what has been advertised as the gar-: den spot of the continent. We have |- lost that distinction {irretriavably and what we have lost Florida has galned. “But you do not know what you are going to gain wthin the next de- cade from these disappointed grow- ers of the Pacific coast. They will bring to the State a sclentific and | business.like administration of the business such as, I infer, you have not known up to the present time. The same energy, co-operation and organization that has made Califor- nia fruit known around the world will, added to the business you have already developed, advertise Florida to the ends of the earth.” - Mr. Michod etarted on thé return trip to his western home last night, and goes batk a thoroughly convert- ed Florida missionary.—Miami Her- ald.
