Representative L’Engle wants to tear down precedence. He has in- troduced a resolution that “prece- dence has no place in government of the people, and that the custom pre- of members of the House in trans- ecting public business in the govern- ment departments is objectionable t this House, and ‘a continuance m: this practice will be regarded as an effront.” The rules committee, to which resolution is referred, probably will | see to it that official knowledge ci this resolution never reaches the oth- er end of the capitol. i However, Representative L’Englc has found many friends in the re- porters about the capitol in this res-! olution, which declares that ‘the:c' shall be no more secret committe: | meetings and that newspaper meu slall be allowed access to commit- tce rooms at all times. He also would have votes in committee re- corded and published. Another L’Engle resolution would create a committee on welfare and Lappiness in the House, and all pro- posed legislation relating to socini| and living conditions, public healt and woman suffrage would be re- ferred to it. ORLANDO VOTES FOR COMMISSION GOVERNMENT. By the slight majority of two, the new charter, providing for a radical change in our city government, was voted into peing here Saturday. This means that Orlando will be governel after the first of next year by a mayor and two commissioners, re- placing the time honored beard oi aldermen. This change has long been }'- discussed; but like many changes of a revolutionary nature, its comln;:l was quict; verily it slipped in. The 15 no doubt whatever that although the voters of Saturday were compara- | tively few, and the majority jusi barely enough to carry the issue over the line—there is no dounbt in spit: of these facts that the vast majority ol the citizens of the city favor com- ndssion government. It was the na- ture of the charter that was sub- mitted, the measures of government which is provided, that were the bone ! of contention, It was the provision for the hiring of so-called cheap men fcr the city that met with especial Clsapproval. Nothing remains to do | now, but for the City Council to sub- ! mit the new charter to the Legisla- | ture for approval. And it is up to! every loyal citizen to accept the! change in good faith and to labor to | make the new government a success. —Orlando Reporter-Star.
