Yesterday we said that if Seeretary of State DIryan was for (‘olonel Cal- fhoun for collector of the port of Tampa the issue mizht as well be regarded as settled. Milton Smith is now grind- ' fng out his Tallahassee Daily Demo- erat rivht along and it is filling a long-felt want. But if Bro. Smith | will pardon us we wonld suggest to fiim that he must have an editorial page for his daily. The legislators may disparaze that page of a paper and affect to think lightly of it as a matter of little or no consequence, but they don’t think that way, in fact. Just touch one of them “on the raw” on that paze of the paper and his affected indifference instant- Iy dizappears and he is keen to re- eent it and put himself right on the particular issue involved. The opin- fcns of Mr, Editor in cold type are like the opinions of the individual expressed by word of mouth—they have weight an dexert influence just fn proportion to their real value, with the large advantage in favor of the editor that he can reach a thou- oand where the Individual reaches a dozen and what he may say has a cer- ] from Alachua, Putnam, Clay, and Bradford. Com- pulsory education is on the way all over the world, for ignorance is the chief menace of the human race, ——00 There are some big propositions be fere the Florida Legislature, but by long odds the biggest is the bill in- troduced by Senator Calkins to bring about the long desired reform in the Florida prison system. This reform involves the abolition of the convier lease system at the expiration of the present lease, the establishment of a State penitentiary and prison farm in Eradford county and the use of con- victs in the construction of public roads. It is understood that the Cai- kins bill embodies the ideas of Gov- ernor Trammell on this subject as expressed in his message and it is a conservative measure which seems to be practicable. It will be interesting to note what the constructive states- manship in the Legislature will do with this issue. e A Lawyers and others who are paid to do the work of lobbyists in the Legislature have no inherent right to ply their vocaticn without restric- tions.
