DIBBELL. 35¢ 35¢ ligiz Jupiter started the battle in his own original manner by leaping high in the air and alighting on top of his ad- versary. Though taken at u disadvan- tage, the under dog bad plenty of pluck and made a brave effort to throw Jupiter off and get at him. He failed, however. and could do little but get in a stray bite at his opponent’s legn. For a few secondy pandemonium reigned; then a man dashed out of the lane reaching the combatants at the same instant as did Jeane. That young woman grabbed Jupiter by the collar and began to haul with all her strength while the man seized his own canine by the hind legs and pulled vigor ously. Jeane snapped the leash of Jupiter's collar and gave him a sound box on the ear. “You wicked dog,” she cried, “l am ashamed of you—how dare you disobey me when 1 call you!" The man spoke wrathfully. “Your dog has a mean way of fighting—what chance has anything against him when he drops from the air?" | “You say that because your dog was getting the worst of it,” Nlared Jeape “If he had been smart enough to think up such a way ot fighting you would think It gomeihing wonderful—didn't he have just as much chance to jump on Jupiter as Jupiter did on him?" After which thrust she turned and made for the village, Jupiter meekly tralling behind her at the end of the leash. After this encounter Jeane and Jup!- ter took their daily outings in an op- posite direction, and. a week passed peacefully. One glorious morning when they had wandered unusually far afleld, great was Jeane's dismay to see trotting toward them the bull dog twin. Fortunately Jupiter was within reach and she snapped on the leash before he could escape. : It was well that the dog's inaster was close behind him, for past ex- perience had not in the least lessened bis desire for battle, and he was dis- gusted when the voice he never dis- obeyed called him to a halt. Jeane cast an unfriendly glance at the man as she said, “Come, Jupiter, it seems there is no place left for us o walk—we will go home and stay -there.” But Jupiter did not see it in that light; he wanted to finish the task of licking the other dog and to turn his back on the foe did not appeal to him, He tugged savagely,at the strap and Jeane could not budge him The man regarded her with an ag: gravating smile. “Why not let them bave It out? he inquired. “I think Barty has caught on to the sky scraper act by this time—I have done 13 J.
