WE DID IT ONCE; CAN DO IT AGAIN. Our news columns carry a story of the further progress of Lakeland along spiritual lines, the city evi- dently keeping pace in this respect with its commercial advancement. The churches of Lakeland, as a whole would be a credit to any community, and the enterprise which enabled the citizens to erect in a single day a house of worship has been heralded far and wide, and nothing that has ever transpired here has been pro- ductive of more desirable advertis- ing for this place. A second opportunity to show the world the character of citizens com- posing Lakeland’s population is now citered. (Written for This Paper.) It seems to be the general opinion { ¢ most chicken fanciers that to be suceessful with poultry is a task so y of accomplishment that it is not at all necessary to give the subject any special foréthought whatever, We are willing to acknowledge that raising chickens is nothing new te most people, and that it has been gcing on for time indefinite, but it is not until within recent years that the vocation has been recognized as an art and a science. We are fully convinced that it requires as much experience and business acumen to hendle a flock of fowls in a way that will insure the maximum profit, as it does to succeed in most lines of legitimate business And until the apprentice is willing te concede this point, he will evidently have to con- tent himself with groping in the dark, and his plans will be thwarted in many ways. \We have decided that the elements of chance, as applied to the poultry business, is the counterpart to that crooked, crafty, little word “if" so often used by us all in our effort to describe the disgust of mismanage- r:ent and the horrors of lost oppor- tunities which have flitted by most of us on every hand. If | go into the poultry business by buying foundation stock or eggs at random, the clements of chance are against me. The stock may look well all right, but as pretty is *skin deep” only, 1 would need assurance that the inward structure had been looked after equally as wel] as the outward appearance. If the party from whom | purchased them under- stand how to mate and raise first- «lass stock, all good and well, 1 am very fortunate indeed, but on the other hand, if he don’t know any- thing about this important stage of the lost out, because th ne, It clecting game, 1 have clements of chance were agzainst pend several years caretully the very best of layers, and pairing them with male bivds ol wdid strain ot prolific laye il tocide Plood s essential to permanent sne- chanticlesrs of td promiscuons S, amd o par tnknown parenta very 1 A | istake brecding, huve made another n tor the clements of Chamee are azainst me I 1 buy teyman who does w ponl- “tock any ol Jecting ailing sp from and the multitude of other de- to the stock, they layers, stock or eges of not give his special care in the way re wimens his yard tails which ation ot first-cl are as nece v will not prove md they voelement satistact will develop sich ol chiance ar nst I purchase egg hatching Which have been gathered trom (he seneral flock, without any thought us to the the which and @s the average num- per year the as the owner came to them, capacity of hiens ool « hen per over is o conceded to associate editor of | (where houghten feed is fed l"\vlll~“‘|“. town ively) below o profit paying ba Eowill have eause 1o ret it the elements of chance are When it comes 1o maintaining a profit-paying tlock, r than ol there is no het- way Lo perpetuate the blood lines one's ori foun- out the future ations are then eliminated nme provounce in-breod far trom i Cheoone ong wow | Wer any guesti rtaining 1o val poulny EFE jnst before wrote zht to by ald — Matter of Duty.
