There had been talk for a year or' more among the residents of Laurel Cove, high up on the Cumberland range, that a school for their children ought to be opened, thing was an accomplished fact at last. An old log barn had been re- modeled, the schoolmaster had ar- rived, and Laurel Cove was congratu- lating itself on the boom. “I don't reckon this yere Cove will ever be as big as Raleigh or Nash- ville,” cbserved Uncle Jim Henderson, the leading man of the hamlet, “but what I'm sayin' is that we've made a right smart beginning to see the dirt fly.” The schoolmaster was a bachelor of thirty. He had been picked up cheap. He had tried preaching, ped: dling and two or three other occupa- tions and made a failure of each. One to look at him would know that he was shiftless and had no ambition, but Laurel Cove wasn't expecting any great shakes of a schoolmaster—not for awhile anyhow. The name of the pedagogue was Jed Baker, and the school committee had arranged that he should board with the Widow Car- son. That's where the committee made a mistake that had serious re- sults. In the first place, the widow already had another boarder in the person of young Tom Beardsly, who got out ties for the railroad and in- tended to marry her. In the next, there was another widow in the Cove —-a Mrs. Martin, who at once became Jealous of the other and was deter- mined to raise a row. Hardly had the schoolmaster open: ed his “show™” and began teaching A, B, C when there was a conspiracy on foot. Tom Deardsley saw a possible rival in him and determined that his schocl should be a failure Mrs, Martin felt that #he had been slighted, and she went to planning how she could get him to her own cabin, Mrs, Carson admitted that the gchoolmastor was shacklety, but as he wie “eddecated” she felt that she could marry him and aid i to mule {career The school ran along for a couple of months and everybody wis pleased Aside from teaching his pupils that twice five is ten, and that “d-o-g" spells dog, Jed made the announce- ment {hat the world was round and that there was more water than land on this globe. Also, that the Chinese ate rats, and that England was entire- Iy surrounded by wator. Uncle Jim Henderson was ready to admit about tho “d-o-g," but he took exception to the land and water question and pri- vately advised the schoolmaster to go a little slow. “I hain't sayin’ that you hain’t right about it, mind you,” he remarked, “but you see we have had so mighty little to do with land and water, and such a heap to do with coonskins around yere, that it's gwine to take time, My son Bill was sayin' that you told the scholars the other day it was ninety. three niillion miles to the sun” “That's what it 13" replled Jed “Who measured {t?" “It bas heen measured by the as- tronomers,” “And who be them?” “Men who study the sun, moon and st “What did they measure with?' nstruments, Uncle Jim." “Better let it drap, Jed,” s=ald the old man with a shake of his head. "It may be ninety-three million miles to the sun, but you can't find an around these diggins who'll b it's over half a mile and want to git up and be fus it.” Two landlooke the Cove and Among the witnes master and both wi oy had to Towlar to thi o troy s got int re W 1s to give test or ti two or three of the \\lvu\\ Martin huffed the Wido rancor in t something w tain and raided a sti in operation over two ¥« the officials w etill, proving t information in a had bee three wi court indignax that Tom told of havi in secret co a livery stal conversation. 1 a man from the ing up coal lands I'\ investigate cer- taln lands as far as he could and re- od by with a *“reg'lar | schoolmaster” at the head, and the| 10 was Iook | | | Meets ev.r, [ 3 cleared him. | at 1. 0.0 v that he was| | Tennessce 3 all that he! 1 dlall reet, and it| : er a prop- | E. There Eaton, Secy. were those who felt sorry for him, but all felt that the punishment was due. After being cast loose he sat down on a log for an hour with his head in his hands. While he was sitting there the widow Carson was going about in her cabin with tearsin her eyes. Tom Beardsly came in to tell her of the whipping, and she detected the ex-| ultation in his tones. Then she in- stantly remembered a thing or two. He had been in town during the two days she was. She had noticed him in company with a man she believed to be an officlal of some sort. In passing the hotel she had caught a fleeting glimpse of him as he dodged out of sight.
