NEVER TOO MUCH OF LACE If Posslble, the Use of It This Season s Really Becoming Mo- notonous. It 18 to be a season of lace, 20 the modistes bave been telling us, the filmy appearing not only on gowns, but as bat trimmings and parasols, There have been, in consequence, many new and beautiful patterns of lace, some copled from rare old point | and honiton, while novelties of all kinds have made their appearance. The latest of these are the very handsome modern laces wide enough to form a deep underdress or to be made without undue difficulty into | blouses, and yet narrow enough for more crdinary use, with brilliant touches of color interwoven with them, On a cream ground there will he a pattern of large flowers, not wholly colored, but with bright hues intro- duced in an arbitrary manuer which pleases the eye as much as it wonld a gardener. Or a conventional design will be carried out in white or cream, | | [ with thi of ’ mny ne, : with touches of blue and red or a dark blue ground. ‘White lace, with the pattern lirhtly outlined with thread of black is also extremely fashionable. Other trim- mings are mostly comprehended by various metallic embroiderles, clusters of ribbon flowers or the revived fash- ion of button trimming. A lovely evening frock, for instance, of white gauze brocaded with silver vine leaves and tendrils, has an under- dress qf vine leaf lace on which the bunchea of grapes are emjlusized by little crystal buttons. Msteriale May Safely Be Left to the Cholce of the Wearer, 88 Any Num- ber Will Make Up to Excel- nt Advantage. ! The fllustration, to my thinking, gives the daintiest dress of all, and very smart women often order a num- ber of country frocks bullt on just such simple lines. Materials may vary according to the use which will be made of the gown, but the side but- toning on this one-piece style, the con- trasting collar and cuffs, and the easy neck and sleeve cuts never vary, Linen and duck dresses made in this way are used for boating and golf, { and they are admirable for city mar |ko(ing and other skopping, while for working use the dress would very ! likely be in good gingham in a more \ practical color, { Dut why always have one's working s in a practincal color, thinks sonebody, and why, indeed, if one 1 gay ones and looks well in| S0 1 want to tell you that q ittle gowns would be charme it made of ginghams in the d n-! tier colors—pale blue, violet, pink, yel low, ¢te, the plain trimming mateh: | ing patterning of the goods or elre of white. One might not be able ! to scrub the floor in such a dress, but dinner could be cooked while wearing it, for it is understood that a dainty dress must be protected with a large apron. While fresh, the frock in a | Jdelicate color, made up in this man- | ner, would be good enough for re ceiving company morning or after noon, as nobody dresses as much in | summer as in other seasons, When making up house gowns the | tricks of the trade should certainly be cbserved if one wants the genuine house effect and lasting usefulness. For example, the shop dresses, both bodice and skirt, are put together with pudding-bag seams—sewed first on the right side, then on the wrong— this arrangement permitting much better possibilities with laundering. Then as pearl buttons of good sort are always dearer than fancy bone ones, & number of the frocks show the smartest knob fastegers in bright col- ors. One black and white percale frock seen recently was decked off with knob bone buttons in & rich wa. termelon pink, these running down the side of the dress from the meck to hem. Buttons of the same sort, or 1o ba ol ARV g the blue, violet, yellow, green or any other color, can be had for 12 and 25 cents a card.
