The inhabitauts of Fontainebleau are protesting against some of the Sur- y uses to which the picturesque forest, with its huge volcanic boulders, is be- fng put by some of the cinemato- graphic companies There was a lion bunt with a real lion in the forest of Fontainebleau a few days ago, and the people who live in the neighbor- hood think that freedom in trade mat- tere is being pushed somewhat too far. ==Paris Letter to london Express. EASTER BELLS. Chime, solemn bells of Easter! The shadows flee away, And all the earth is smiling In glory of the day. Ring, tender bells of Easter! Beyond our toil and tears There wait for all the faithful Heaven's long and happy years. Break, joyous bells of Easter! Far across the sea, Bring us the endless music Of immortality. Triumphant bells of Easter! Again by angels rung, Speak comfort to the sorrowing | Of every land and tongue. Blend golden bells of Easter! Heaven's fairest and its best, To hush earth’s clamorous discords And soothe earth’s sad unrest. . . L4 Delightful Picnic. Tue high school department of the West Main Street Private school held a pienic Thursday afternoon. Four automobile trips were made, convey- ing the jolly crowd to Lake Parker, | where they spent the time most joy- Irully, bathing, fishing, boating, games, ete., and closed the day with a tug-of- war and ball game in which both boys and girls participated. Two members of the party were voted deserving of Carnegie medals for saving (?) so many lives through- out the day. One girl fell in three times, in the water (in the boat), but was prompt- ly hung on a line to dry. All report a jolly good time and plenty of good things to eat. . . Meeting of Baracas. Tomorrow in the Churches. taster will pe appropriately ob- served in all of the churches tomor- row morning and evening. There will be services at the Methodist, Baptist, Kpiscopal, Christian and Presbyterian churches, and large congregations will avail themselves of the oppor- tunity of observing the glad Easter- tide by attending the various houses of worship. . Oriental Effect. The oriental effect seems to pre- dominate in the new spring fashions, heavy embroidered, bright colors and rich combinations of colors carrying out the idea. Everything has a touch of color even the white lingerie dresses, in which it is introduced in the crushed girdle of velvet, or a band of bright velvet or satin introduced in the cor- sage. . And speaking of the girdle, all of the new dresses, whether for informal wear or for the evening, have the decided waistline, emphasized with a crushed girdle from an inch or two inches in width. Perhaps there is a straight band of velvet in a deep rich shade if the dress is black, or some neutral tint, while in the smart little afternoon frocks, as often as not, is in a stiff leather belt, with a handsome buckle. A few of the new dresses show the normal waistline, although the great majority, and especially the three- piece suits, are slightly raised, al- though not so high as during the last season. Another pretty effect in the new styles is the lacing, or simulated lac- ing, introduced in the tunics over the shoulders and even on the front of the blouse. Very often this effect is gained by scallops and poiuts meeting and held together by tiny silken tassels, while the large crocheted eyelets through which soft silk straps are woven in and out are seen on some of the smart linen frocks. L] L] * Joy of Easter Grown With the Ages. - What the world would have been without Kaster; what women would have been we can but faintlyimagine, Without the hope that sprang from that open grave in far-away Judea, life would lack a high incentive to purity, truth and love for our neigh- bor. If this were all; if with the ebb- ing of life there were no hope of a “beyond;"” then would selfishness and pleasure reign supreme, the law of might would prevail, and this world be a worse place than it is for the poor, the sick, and the lowly. If we cannot wholly approve of the world’s method of observing KEaster and the days immediately preéceding it, the Easter festival with its curious observances have an interest in that however feebly, they draw universal attention to the day of the risen Lord. However, it may be kept, whether with heartfelt worship or perfunc- tory following of long custom, this Easter morning finds the world unit- ed in celebration of that great day that brought joy and hope to a small band of men and women, weeping for a lost Jeader whom they called the Christ—until their faith was tested by the dire tragedy of the cross. The joy of that long gone Easter morn has grown with the ages, until its radiance is felt the world over, even by those who do not call them- selves believers in the “Risen Lord.” | We Are Ready, Madam, to Talk New Spring Clothes Spring Wearables & Spring Weather Our windows are showing and our announcements are herald- ing the newest, nobbiest Spring Clothes for you and your daugh- ter.
