By BILL GIBB NOTE TO READER: Any similarity in the lives of . Eddie Cantor & Charlie Wardlow is Chatlie Wardlow is a prime example of what a young man can accomplish when he loves his work—and his hometown! Perhaps no other person has done more to improve the outward appearance of Key West than Charlie. And certainly, there are few others who can compete with him when it comes to civic ldyality! Wardlow made his start in the landscaping business about | a dozen years ago. He opened a garden and lawn supply store, the first of its kind on,the island. Using his wife’s baby scales and with one sack of fertilizer as stock, Wardlow rapidly pro- gressed to the point where he could afford a secondhand lawn- mower. It was powered by an electric motor which he installed himself. Today, Wardlow Landscaping Company has the finest equip- ment available—power sprayers, tractors, graders, hydraulic ladder trucks, soil shredders, and all the other paraphernalla which is necessary to really do quality landscaping and main- tenance work, Wardlow is proud that has gained the reputation for honesty, dependability, and superior workmanship. But he’s humble enough to admit where he gained the knowledge of his business. R. B. Pittman R, B. Pittman, the. man who landscaped the Casa Marina grounds as well as the Navy Hospital area, was Wardlow's teacher, ~ “T still go to Mr. Bittman for advice,” wg Charlie. “There's nobody quite like him.” Perhaps such acceptance of an older man’s experience is one of the keys to Charlie’s success. There are a lot of things in any business which cannot be learned from books, This is especially true of landscaping in a tropical climate. Although Key West has never before had a professional landscaper, many of its older citizens have adopted the growing of flowers and shrubs as a hobby? Because they recognize a kindred spirit in Wardlow, they are always anxious and ready to help him with knowledge gained through the years. Sod From Belle Glade Area ‘Wardlow landscaped the new Howard Johnson restaurant on Roosevelt Boulevard. He does all the work of this type for CBS Construction. Co., and a large portion of Porter-Wagor- Russell's. The new Athletic Field was fenced and sodded by Wardlow. “There are all kinds of sod,” explains Charlie. “I won't use the kind that comes from the Miami area although it is cheaper. That’s because of chinch bugs which are so prevalent in that section. My so dcomes from the Belle Glade area. We haul it on our own trucks. Our sod, like our plants, is submitted to a close inspection for possible disease or pests before it is ever brought to. Key West.” For awhile, Wardlow operated his own nursery. He closed down this portion of the business, however, after discovering that because of high water rates, etc., it was cheaper to buy plants. Wardlow Landscaping can supply you with ‘a 30-foot coconut palm as quickly as it can with a small croton or bou- gainvillaea. Lawn Maintenance Service and Fencing One of the best features about Wardlow Landscaping is the fact that it operates a lawn maintenance service. It’s not only economical, it’s plumb restful, to sit back and let Charlie’s boys assume the backaches and miseries of mowing and trimming your lawn! What’s more, the little lady isn’t so apt to fuss about your laziness if she kncws that every other week, Ward- low Landscaping is going to spruce up the yard. Phone 2-3454 for further information. Because of its durability, steel fencing is becoming quite popular in Key West. There’s practically no maintenance cost if first-quality material is used. Wardlow handles the Cyclone fence—e fence which meets all government specifications. You can see his work around our various public schools. Perhaps it would be worth mentioning that Wardlow’s crew is factory- trained by the Cyclone Fence Company. When they put up a fence, it stays there—without stretching or sagging! Cities Service Station Just recently, Charlie Wardlow purchased the Cities Ser- vice Station at Fleming and Simonton Streets. Mike Carey— a fine, up-and-coming young man—is manager of the business. It is operated on the same principle. as the landscaping com- pany—efficient, quality service to all customers. Mike Carey says: “If we don’t check under your hood, your Gasoline is free!” Such thoughtfulness is unique in this day and age. Surreys There isn’t much need of mentioning the surreys w! Charlie Wardlow re-introduced to Key West a few weeks They've received plenty of publicity. I asked Charlie if he was making any money ¢ “No,” he replied. <‘And I don't expect to. Mi bringing them to Key West was to add color and create comment tourists. You to contribute a little something if we're going to help town to advance.” Charlie is right—the surreys will never be money-makers in’ this motorized age but they are providing valuable pub- licity for Key West.
