Turnpike Unit Cuts Estimate On ORLANDO — The Florida _ | Turnpike Authority has come down 11 million dollars on the estimated cost of the Miami-Fort Pierce toll Toad. . , Ata meeting heré Tuesday it Passed a resolution asking its fi- nancial agents to try to reduce the amount to 78 million dollars in bond validation proceedings now before Judge W..May Walker at Tallahassee. Robert H. Cook, vice president Thursday, November 18, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN of B. J. Van Ingen Co., a’ finan- cial agent for the Authority, said at Miami “We are delighted if this can be done. The project, we believe, was perfectly sound at the 89 million dollar estimate and if the job can be done at. the lower figure it just makes it that much better and probably will give a better ‘coupon rate.” The authority reduced the esti- mate after hearing a report from engineers that six million dollars Page 7 ee Toll Road be saved without changing the design. : Marvin Adams of. Miami, chair- man of the Authority, then said another five million could be cut “because of interest savings made by the advance of nearly three million dollars by the State Road Department to cover preliminary expenses and additional interest savings made by reduction of the size of the bond issue.” The requirement of fiscal law- yers that a 10 per cent contingency fund be included in the bond issue “probably also could be reduced now from the original $7,100,000 estimate,” Adams said. J. E. Everson of the firm of | |Parsons, Brinckerh Hall and MacDonald, told the authority “We are 95 per cent complete in our engineering work on roads and ‘bridges and we find we can save six million dollars by reduction in amounts of various materials need- ed.” Gay Operetta Of No. Woods Due At Strand The week’s big screen attraction at the Strand Theatre is ‘Rose Marie,” M-G-M’s first Cinema - Scope musical starring Ann Blyth, Howard Keel, Fernando Lamas, Bert Lahr and Marjorie Main, Here is a picture which literally has everything — color, action, ro- mance, laughter, breathtaking set- tings filmed in the Canadian Roc- kies and in California’s High Sier- ras, and the Rudolph Frim! songs beloved throughout the world. Acting Secretary of the Navy Thomas S. Gates Jr. so said in let- tets to Congress members who had expressed concern over ‘published reports that admirals are trying to gain more control over the Marines. Gates ‘said the final draft of the néw order has not been completed. Gates sent Sen. Mansfield (D- Mont) and Rep. Bendér (R-Ohio) copies of a policy memorandum issued last April by then Secretary of the Navy Robert Anderson. That document termed the Marine Corps a “unique but not separate ser- vice. The memorandum specified the chief of Naval operations as the senior military officer of the Naval establishment and gave the Navy secretary authority to assign that officer responsibility for certain Marine Corps matters. The policy paper also stipulated that the Ma- rine Corps commandant was to be directly responsible to the Navy secretary. The only Marine units placed under Navy command were those on duty aboard ships or attached to Navy shore stations.
